hi, im trying to get into a research position. i've tried to apply to two positions at srp but got rejected for both. how hard is it to obtain a position in this program? if not, is there anywhere else beside srp that i can look around for? any tips would be greatly appreciated!

You applied to ONLY two? I know they say that you should only look for research positions that interest you, but I sent an email to any of the labs that I qualified for and I only got a handful of responses.

If you’re extremely aggressive, you can ask your professors, both past and present, if they can have another undergrad in their lab. A friend of mine camped out in CHS and just asked anybody who passed by if she could be in their lab. It might sound crazy, but it definitely worked for her.

Hi,

You might want to visit the Undergraduate Research Center, its in 2121 Life Sciences I think. They have a bunch of flyers out on the front on how to find a mentor. Their advice is to usually send out 10 emails, and one is bound to get back to you. I found my mentor that way actually. If you want more help, they’ll surely help you. They also present workshops sometimes on how to get into research.

You can go to uclaaccess (just google it). They have a list of current professors with labs that you can join. Plus you can filter the professors by department and etc. I searched around in the Biochemistry department, and emailed almost all of those professors, and about three got back to me! Professors are crazy busy, so don’t be discouraged if you don’t get a reply. Just send another one after two weeks or something to make sure they didn’t just miss your email.
