Everyone needs to stop worring a bit. UC admissions are among the most straightforward of colleges.

high gpa and high SATs. Everything else is far far away in terms of weight.

Everyone needs to stop worring a bit. UC admissions are among the most straightforward of colleges.

high gpa and high SATs. Everything else is far far away in terms of weight.

but i've heard some really smart ppl didnt even get into berkeley...and la..is ucla random?

So your saying a higher gpa with less ap's looks better than a lower gpa with more ap's.....I'm not talking a huge difference....a 3.9 to a 4.0

bc someone at my school has an aunt that works in the admissions for uc davis and she said that a 3.8 in ap is better than a 4.0 in college prep

Be instate.. that's quite important.

Yes I was going to say...if you want to get into UCs live in California.

I think UCLA is pretty random; the other UCs are pretty straightforward.

they are ALL straightforward. ELC means a 60% acceptance at Cal and LA; all others, elc = 90-100%. Moral of the story: transcipts count, a lot. Big tip factors for low income, first generation to go to college, and/or attending a poor performing HS.

how do colleges (UC's) look at freshmen grades?

UCs don't. Other colleges might, but place much less weight on them

They look at the grades, but they do not factor into your GPA

The score breakdown:

UCB/UCLA: 2100 SAT I, 4.15 UC GPA
UCSD: 2000 SAT I, 4.00 UC GPA
UCI/UCSB/UCD: 1900 SAT I, 3.85 UC GPA
UCSC/UCR/UCM: 1800 SAT I, 3.70 UC GPA

^ that's so wrong it's not even funny... those stats are for privates and ivys.

my close friends got into ____ with _____:
A- Berkeley- 1840 SAT/3.5 GPA
B- UCLA- 1750 SAT/3.8 GPA
C- UCI- 1520 SAT/3.4 GPA
D- UCSB- 1620 SAT/3.6 GPA

I got into UCI and UCSD with 1970 SAT/3.3 GPA

All those numbers u see are crap... people in my school were accepted at UCSD which is supposedly in tier 1 of the ucs with 3.2/3.3s and 1600s... those numbers that are usually displayed are off and are too high.

Did I mention the fact that UCB/UCLA can sometimes be a crap-shoot?
Guess not...

Do you guys think it's even worth applying to UC's out of state?

attend a not so competitive public california high school, and because of the ELC you are at least guaranteed a spot into a UC. I'm thinking LAUSD schools. Besides the fact that your GPA will be inflated, you'll be able to stand out among your peers.

I strongly disagree with most of the posts on this thread.

I know for a fact that UC Berkeley looks at EC's more or less (probably a little less, but not by much) the same amount as private schools. It used to be that Berkeley did not, and it still carries that reputation while its admissions officers have already shifted their positions. This particular tidbit I got from talking to a Berkeley senior admissions officer.

The other UC's? I'm not sure, though I highly suspect that UCLA is following a similar policy.

Randomness is very true. I have seen some relatively low stat people get into Berkeley and some very high stat people get rejected. Compare, 3.3 weighted GPA and probably less than 2000 SAT score to 4.12 weighted GPA and about 2200 SAT score. Stats of two people I know--the 3.3 got in, the 4.12 did not. Was the 3.3 more qualified/better person? I don't know. I personally do not believe so, but cannot accurately judge. Even so--even if it is only anecdotal and not statistically significant because of that, it does show pure stats reasoning can fall flat.

As for APs, the number you take falls under "class rigor" catagory which is given significant weight. I do not suggest you hit the AP mark each semester that is counted and then stop.

i reapplied to the uc's this past year and so far have been accepted again to ucsd. i applied for fall 2005 and was accepted back then as well. but never attended.

the schools i've applied to have so far accepted me. uci, ucsb, and ucsd.

my stats were like a 3.8 weighted and 1130 on the sat's, my sat2's were basically bellow 600, but i got like a 760 on spanish(native language) come from middle class family.

i haven't heard from berkeley yet, mainly because i lost my seven digit id number that allows me to check online. i guess i'll wait for the notice by mail.

Good grades + 2100 SAT will give you 90% chance of getting in Berkeley or LA. (if you're instate)

The score breakdown:

UCB/UCLA: 2100 SAT I, 4.15 UC GPA
UCSD: 2000 SAT I, 4.00 UC GPA
UCI/UCSB/UCD: 1900 SAT I, 3.85 UC GPA

UCSC/UCR/UCM: 1800 SAT I, 3.70 UC GPA

i can understand where you're coming from by saying this, especially for UCB/UCLA where pretty much EVERYONE at my school who didn't have those stats got rejected. however, for the other ones it's completely different. i know someone with like a <1600 sat1 that got into UCSD. and people with like 3.0 uc gpas getting into the lower and mid tier UCs (like irvine, etc.)

also, in my case i got into SD with a 3.75/2040 and it was engineering. (some ppl put me as a reach) but i didn't get into LA and Berkeley for their Letters and Science majors.

i've heard that 4.0+ 1500+ (old sat) has a 99% acceptance to UCB, and i'd believe it.

UCB is never a crapshoot for a qualified applicant.

i know about ucsd...
i read on magazine,,,
ucsd office said that they admit top60%of people of number and then they consider other things for bottom 40%
