How to get research?

I've been hearing about a lot of people who are very interested in the sciences, especially medicine, as I am, who are conducting "research" as high school students.

What exactly does this nebulous term refer to? To be considered to have conducted "research," do you need to work with a professor, a doctor, get your work published, etc?

In short, how can I hunt down and set myself up with some research opportunities of my own?

Thanks a whole lot!

You should contact professors or doctors that have labs close to where you live. Choose ones who have work you are interested in and let them know why you are interested. A local nature center is also a good resource. Your guidance counselor or some of your teachers may have contacts or have heard of opportunities in your area, so try asking one of them.

it also depends where you live....for example i live in Miami-Dade county in Florida and the school system here has a program they call the HEIP (Honors Executive Internship Program) where, if you meet the standards, you can apply to intern in a variety of different fields with professionals who volunteer to be your mentor and the internship actually counts as an extra honors credit on your transcript....you can do your internship in any area like working at a lawyers office or the county coroners office or working at the local university and helping a professor do research in whatever you chose (like me i signed up for it and im gonna be doing biomedical research at bascom palmer eye institute)

anyways you should check if your school system has a program like the one i just mentioned and try to get in on it if possible...if not dun give up try looking for different clubs or organizations thatmay offer this service or better yet call a professor at the local college and ask them if they have an internship open to a high school student...hey you'll never find what you need if you dont take the initiative to actually go out and look for it =P

oh and good luck =D
