How to impress teachers, stand out, etc

My school is grossly competitive.

Classroom participation is a competitive sport: every kid is vying to be the best and brightest, because ultimately, we're all competing against each other for the best recommendations. And it only gets uglier from there.

But I don't want to be a part of the catfight. Instead, I just want to focus on improving myself--not bringing down my peers.

How can I impress my teachers and stand out?

I'm quick to learn, I listen in class, take active notes, participate when I have valuable input, ask for help when needed, etc. But that's all been done and done better. What are some other ways to be a good student?

If your teacher stays after school or is available early in the morning for help for class, come in during that time and try to help them set up. If you need help, just do your work and ask questions if needed. If you’re seen in the class a lot then you’ll be remembered even more, especially isnce it’ll be your OWN time.

First off, ask early. Earlier than your peers ever will.

Also, go after school for help alot, even if you don’t need help. Make insightful comments. Offer to clean up lab supplies, if it’s a science teacher. Participate in a club that the teacher heads, possibly.

Obviously you’d have pick the one or two teachers you want rec’s from first.

The best way to impress teachers and stand out is to be yourself. Try to be open and honest with them. This lets them know who you are as a person so when they write your recs (and give you guidance throughout high school), it will be effective.

If you don’t know exactly who you are, that’s okay. Just be cognizant of what personal qualities you think are important and let them shine through. This will serve you well throughout life as well.

Good luck :)

I think the fact that you’re above all that petty competition makes you stand out already. Try to show that part of yourself to teachers…They’ll adore it, because that’s the mark of a true intellectual.

Remember their birthdays. Trust me, that really helps!

Answer their questions…WITH QUESTIONS.
