I’m a sophomore in high school and my grades are pretty good, but my extracurriculars aren’t very strong. The school I went to freshman year was a Junior High and there were basically no clubs or afterschool activities, so my only ECs were treasurer of NHJS, drama club, and band (I was in the top band). I moved my sophomore year and the school I go to now is pretty weak in activities and clubs. I am secretary of Key Club and also in robotics club, cyber security club, drama class (which I won’t do next year), and band. I’m not very good at engineering and not in the engineering class, so I don’t really get to do anything in robotics or cyber security and I don’t enjoy it that much. All of the clubs are student run and most don’t do anything except meet once a week at lunch. The only strong and involved clubs are robotics and cyber security (which is why I joined those clubs). I was really looking forward to joining debate team and drill/dance team at my old school, but this school doesn’t have either. In my junior year I am going to start a Model UN club. I was wondering what I can do to make my ECs stronger even though my school doesn’t offer very much. I volunteer at the local art museum. Are there are activities I could try looking for in my community? I want to find something I’m really interested in so I can put a lot of effort into, but I can’t find anything in my town (it’s a pretty small town and even though the school has a high ranking its course offerings and clubs are pretty small).
Read a lot more on here It is not the quantity of EC’s, but the quality that matters.
For example, it isn’t enough to be in lots of clubs that don’t do anything. Don’t do any of them just to say you did. Do something to get personal satisfaction out of helping others.
What do you do at your art museum? Hand out maps? But does your local art museum have a children’s program? Face painting/arts and craft activities - if not, can you organize onsite babysitting/kids events while parents visit the museum? Team up with freinds to be sure that they have support for this maybe once or twice a month? Publicize it, make it a real program.
I am glad you want to put a lot of effort into whatever you do, but if it isn’t something you are passionate about to begin with, it will become hollow.
Ask yourself why you want EC’s - if it is only to get into a “good/great” college (presumably because this is posted at CC), you might be looking at this from the wrong perspective. Do things that genuinely help your community, that you are genuinely interested in, that you can learn from, and you will help not just yourself, but others as well.
Good luck.
