How to increase scholarship awards

So a friend of mine got some more thousands for sending his IGCSE scores. I wonder what I can possibly do to increase my need-based scholarship.

Every comment is appreciated! Thank you!

@amyhendricks

This is a need based award? If that is the case, it is based in your family income and assets…income from 2015…assets now. Not sure there is anythingnyou can do to increase a need based award if your financials were accurately reported and haven’t changed.

What school? How much of an award did you get already? How much more do you need?

It sounds like your friends award was a merit award.

@thumper1 Sorry I messed it up. Yes it’s merit-based. I got $17k and I need at least $32,050 more

You need $31,000 MORE in need based aid to,attend this school? Or merit aid?

Either way…you are unlikely to get a $30,000 plus increase in ANY kind of aid from any school.

@thumper1 So I should expect to receive at most some more thousands, right?
Opps! Thanks for letting me now anw!

@amyhendricks

What is the basis of you asking for more aid?

If it’s need based aid…you would need some catastrophic financial issue to get the attention of the financial aid department for an increased award that is tripling what the school gave you.

If it’s merit…what new accomplishments have you? Even with that…again…you are asking for an award inntotal that is three times what the school gave you.

Hoping others chime in…but I think expecting an additional $30,000 in ANY kind of aid is unrealistic.

But that’s my opinion.

@twoinanddone @BelknapPoint @sybbie719 ??

This school is not affordable for you if you need another $30K. No one is going to increase the aid to that amount.
Merit is aid based on your stats. If your stats were near perfect, then you could probably get some dollars at other schools that need you and your stats.

You are an international student, so are really under a different set of rules.

You need to talk to the schools to see if there is a way to increase merit awards. At some schools, for example, getting a higher score on the ACT or improving your gpa might push you into the next level of merit aid. Some schools allow you to keep submitting improved scores/grades through high school graduation while others have earlier cut offs. You said a friend got more money by submitting some scores. Ask your school if that will help.

Oh brother. You are an international student?

Does your college even guarantee to meet need for international students? Some schools clearly state that aid for international students is limited.

Some colleges (like Alabama) will increase their merit awards based on updated SAT scores. You need to contact the schools and see if they will increase the merit and what could make that happen.

@amyhendricks

Could you please clarify what YOU are trying to increase? I thought it was need based aid.

If it’s need based aid you are hoping to increase…your finances would need to change.

Even Alabama, which is very generous with merita aid…would likely not give you an additional $30,000 in aid on top of the $17,000 you already have.

And as noted above…some schools have LIMITED aid for international students. If your school is one of those, you won’t see an increase…at all…for any reason.

Are you talking about a couple of thousand more he got for sending those scores? If you’re talking about a LOT more, then likely the higher new award wasn’t really related to that.
