How to keep in touch with admission office??

I have heard that keeping in touch with the admissions office is good to show interest for the school. What kinds of things would you write in an email or call about? How early would you start contacting them for the purpose of showing interest? Also, what is a good reason to get in touch with the Dean of Admission so you have personal communication with him/her?

Be careful, if a school is concerned with applicants showing interest, this might be a good thing to do, but you still run the risk of being pesky and annoying. And the very selective schools in general don't care about candidates showing interest as they have high matriculation yields. Having contact with your regional admissions rep is much less important than your gpa, test scores, ECs and the rest of your application.

I can't think of any reason why you would need to contact the Dean of Admissions.

My interviewer actually encouraged me to keep in touch with them and show interest at quite an elite school.

Any other opinions?

While I agree it's less important than grades etc, and I wouldn't "show much interest" until perhaps this admission's cycle is past, but I see nothing wrong with legitimately keeping in touch with a regional rep. However... the caveat here is you don't make up reasons to bug people. :)
