The Chicago Manual of Style says that you should italicize book titles. In some of my essays, I use the names of books, but since I have to paste my essay into a text box, the italicized title just becomes normal. Should I just capitalize a book title and leave it as it is? i.e.- The Great Gatsby blah blah blah... Or should I put it in quotes even though that isn't the correct way? I don't want to make it look like I don't know how to properly list a book title.

You are correct to use Chicago, and yes, they should be italicised. The Common App allows you to italicise them - you unfortunately just have to go back through, find the titles, and italicise them again once you’ve pasted the essay into the textbox.

I actually meant pasting it on the college’s website, not the Common App. On the college’s website, it says to remove all formatting, so I guess it really doesn’t matter then, since it removes the italicized words anyway.
