For a title of an essay (not for college), I'm drawing from the name of a book, so I would put the name of the book in quotes in the title, right? But then, I am adding a word within the name of the book, so should I put that in paranthesis or what: here's an example of what I mean:

"A Series of (Fortunate) Unfortunate Events"

or should it be italicized b/c it is book series...

what do I do with the word 'fortunate'?

It doesn't need to be in quotes if it's a play on the name of the book...which I'm assuming it is

A teacher once told me that b/c it is the title of someone else's famous work, I need to put it in quotes or italicize it or whatever.....

that's if you're refering to the book. since you're changing it around it doesn't need to be. However, if you refer to it in the essay, it should be italicized.

okay...and I have another question...I'm doing a similar thing for a newspaper article...and in the paper don't they normally italicize the reference in the title...?
