How to make the most out of a college visit?

I'm visiting the University of Richmond in August, but it's a six hour drive and I think with the tour and information session, my visit would only last about two hours. How can I make the drive more worth it? Obviously it's worth it to me because I feel like it might be the school for me, but I want more than just a tour. Any tips on what else I should do while I'm there?

Though there probably won’t be many students on campus since it’s the summer, you should ask the students who are there about their experiences. Scheduling an overnight is ideal, however, you’re visiting in the summer. Just get a feel for the campus, the surrounding neighborhood, and make sure to ask unique questions and seem really interested in the school!

Go to the dining hall, and watch the students. Strike up random convos with them about the school. And visit any departments you are interested in and meet a professor if possible. Also, try to sit in on a class. You can find the catalog online most likely, and email the professor asking to sit in that day.

Summer is a hard time to get a true feeling for the school as the students by and large will not be around. Some schools have camps, high school programs etc. on campus in the summer so the kids you see may not be reflective of the normal student body. If a current student gives the tour in the summer, ask a lot of questions. If school was in session, I’d suggest eating in the cafeteria (may still be worth a try), trying to arrange to sit in on a class on your child’s area of interest, and just looking at the students etc. to see if he/she feels comfortable.

Thanks everyone!

I just realized most of my post is unhelpful in summer. Sorry.

It’s fine! If I love it I guarantee I’ll be back for a second visit haha.
