I'm attending my first industry event tonight with a friend, and our goal is to network. For my internship, we have to get at least three business cards from professionals at events like these. I'm going to be attending an advertising media auction. Any tips on networking? I'm interested in meeting new people but of course my priority to is to get the business cards for my class. How do I go about doing this?

The best way to network at events is through how you present yourself. Dress up, be confident and in general act friendly and inviting. Having a business card with you , even with your personal contact information like ph#, email and other relevant information can really help. Also, I suggest, you should create a small script on how to introduce yourself, your interests and your objectives you want to get out of the events. Mostly, being social, asking the right questions and presenting yourself as interested and engaged helps alot! Good luck networking…

I know this is too late for you, but it may be helpful for others…

The way you present yourself is the most important factor, like collegeboi (lols at “boi”) said above. I would go a little beyond the typical dress-to-impress and act-friendly stuff: make sure that your handshake expresses what you need it to express (i.e. that you are confident); before you enter the room, make sure that you are smiling (that will completely change your appearance for the better, and it will make others want to talk to you); when you get there, figure out who you want to talk to (at events like these, there is a wide variety of different companies, so you want to try to avoid wasting your time if time is a factor).

Networking events like those are super fun! Hope you had a blast
