How to Pay for College When Parents Can’t Help or are not committed to it?

I want to go to University of Houston which is about 28k for out of state students. Im from arkansas by the way.
The thing is that i probably will receive average scholarships not enough to cover many things but idk yet.
My dad im pretty sure that he will give me $0 for my tuition, room, etc. So what shall I do once I get in (because I will, my friend with a 22 in the act got in and i am a 29)
will banks loan money for my first 4 years or what? i talking about 50% or 70% of it hopefully i can cover the other 50% or 30% with scholarships. The thing is that I am a slow learner and it takes me the whole day just do my homework which I am straight A’s, well 2 B’s lol but i am a 3.5 gpa and Im taking 3 AP and 4 honors which is understandable because english is not my first language, Im from peru :stuck_out_tongue:
Also, how can i deal with the fafsa i mean they will count the salary of my dad and he wont help. he makes about 45k a year and he is paying a house of about 180 k or so idk but i have a Stepbrother which means that i have a stepmom which i think is illegal with no meaningful salary but the child will appear in the records
Thank you for your help.

No, the school will not lend you 50% of the costs. $28k for tuition? Then the cost to attend will be about $45k. You can’t afford the school.

Look at schools that will give you substantial amounts in merit money. If you can get the ACT up to a 32, you’ll really have a lot more options. BUT, look at your instate schools. They most likely will be cheaper.

Also, are you (you, not your parents) American citizens? If not, you’ll be really limited. If you are, you’ll be able to take a $5500 loan, and if your entire family income is $45k, you might get a partial Pell grant. Your father will need to complete the FAFSA for you to qualify for that. It won’t cost him anything and he’s not committing to paying for your college, but he needs to complete the form.

Are your parents willing to fill in financial aid forms at least? If so, you may want to run the net price calculator on each college to see what financial aid it may offer. (Out of state public schools are unlikely to offer enough.)

If not affordable on need-based aid, or you want additional options, you may want to see if any full ride merit scholarships are available for you:

If your parents can’t or won’t pay, you need to look at affordable options…and schools that have the potential to be afffordable.

Do you live with your dad? Where is your mom?

What do you mean that your step mother is illegal? Is your dad married to someone other than your mother?

Arkansas has good schools too. You might want to go to community college for the first two years to save money and then transfer to a 4yr university that has articulation agreements with the cc.

Your gpa and test score might be high enough to get merit scholarship for the community college. Work hard and you might be able to get a transfer scholarship later. Also work a part time job and commute from home if possible, at least the first two years.

For junior and senior year you can borrow $7500 so you need to find an affordable school. You might qualify for some Pell and state aid too.

If your dad is married then your stepmom’s income also has to go on the FAFSA.

Start looking for schools in commuting distance that offer your intended major.

OP needs to run the NPC, as ucbalum said. He needs to work with his reality. Of course, if parent income is from self employment, the NPC will be off.

But he can’t get to 28k/year on just the Fed student loan and a Pell. He likely can’t borrow the rest (and that debt total and repayments would be foolish.)

But he also admits his studies now take all day, is a slow learner. I don’t see the time to take a job, enough hours to make any $ difference.

He needs a better plan. Two years at comm college could be affordable, give him time to grow. Then, he looks at dreamier preferences.

The student income will have a large impact on EFC.

^not the first $6400 or so. If he can pay for community college with part time job earnings, then he could save his loans and Pell for when he transfers to university.

If parents are not helping, what else can he do?

At least if he can live at home he can save on living expenses and instate schools might have much lower tuition.

Agree he needs to look at affordable options.

Bottom of the page has links to all of the U Arkansas system 4 yr and 2 yr schools. Commute to the closest one.

Tuition should be about $7,000-8,000 for U ARk campuses and less for cc.

Forget about OOS public when you cannot afford it.

@SawLead Why don’t you go to an instate college for as little debt as possible. Then when you graduate you can move to California or Florida or wherever and Get a place by the beach. Four years are going to fly by.
