How to Pay for Graduate School

My DS is going to pay his way in Graduate school. Don’t know where to begin? Any help would be greatly appreciated! What loans to keep away from? What loans are the best? Any free money out there?

What field is he in? A lot of times, students can get money from the school to attend, as long as they are teaching assistants or research assistants. That’s true for engineering, at least - perhaps others can chime in about other departments.

PhD or Masters? PhD’s should be fully funded.

Masters of Management. Begins in June-may 2020.

If he’s a U.S. citizen, he should be able to get federal loans to cover it.

Students in graduate school can borrow up to $20,500 a year in unsubsidized Direct loans. They are similar in form to the unsubsidized direct loan you’d take as an undergrad.

Then there’s the Direct PLUS loan, which is the same as the Parent PLUS loan (it’s often called a Graduate PLUS loan). Graduate students can borrow PLUS loans up to the cost of attendance. They have higher interest rates than direct loans but generally have more favorable loan terms than private loans.

He needs to borrow just under $80k
