So I am wondering if it is possible to pay for USC totally through loans, scholarships, and whatnot as a transfer student :)) I know don’t laugh! It’s just that I have wanted to move to Los Angeles my whole life and now that I am college aged and graduated from a Florida community college I figured “YAS it’s my chance” and I should take it. But, UCLA doesn’t seem to offer enough scholarships, the state universities in and near L.A seem to be deemed “a joke” according to some pre-dental people I have talked to, and I have no parent contribution because we are let’s just say not even middle class.
Oh yeah, and I want to go to graduate school and become a Dentist so there’s another butt load of money right there, excuse my vernacular.
So, please guys if you know of anyone who has actually made their dreams come true and came from out of state and went to USC OR you know of someone who was able to pay for UCLA and came from out of state in the same situation then please let me know. People keep saying just stay in FL but my heart is in Cali and so are my dreams.
Thanks guys!
There is no financial aid for OOS nonresidents. Transfers have an even tougher time for admission.
Plan on paying $58k per year if you are even admitted. The state will be implementing a cap on OOS students so good luck with that.

USC transfers, pay the same amount no matter where they are from, just a higher bill than the UCs and are even tougher to get into. http://www.usc.edu/admission/fa/undergraduates/admitted/how-much-will-my-education-cost.html
Re instate residency, not going to happen; if you come with an OOS transcript.
Re our “joke” universities, how would you know? You don’t live in California to understand that we have incredible “state” universities throughout California. The Cal Poly’s, SDSU, Long Beach, Northridge, etc. People from these “joke” universities are admitted to our grad schools UCs, CSUs, privates without a problem.
A really bad omen for someone whose “heart” is supposedly in California to start badmouthing our universities.
Obviously you completely misread what I said so I advise you to reread…
But to reword what I said and elaborate:
I spoke with some people who are pre dental students (like me) and told them that I really wanted to go to Cal State Fullerton, Long Beach, or Northridge. They said “the Cal state unis are considered jokes and a slight step up from CCs and you won’t be deemed a serious dental school candidate if you go there. So stay in Florida and go to UF because you’ll have a better chance at getting in.”
Just to summarize. Looking at those schools and seeing how much I liked them I got excited and then those people put a damper on things because they made me feel like they were giving me a reality check. I have always loved Cali and those schools but I had to start considering UCLA and USC because of the way I have been “advised” by those who live in Cali…
SO, I don’t accept your bad omen thanks.
The transfers I know and met through my D at UCLA, real people mind you, were not able to find scholarships or get any additional financial aid. One of them, their parents dipped into their retirement to pay the full fees of roughly $55k. That’s over $100K just to finish the BS.
I live near CSUF and it is no joke. Neither is CSULB nor CSUN. They are all very popular campuses with several great profs. You didn’t talk to the CSU pre-med students, who would have told you that they were well prepared candidates for med school. I’m sure there are successful dental students who came from the CSUs too. So plan on around $35K+ for attending a CSU to finish your BS. Of course that’s if you have the right classes that articulate, to get in!
Dental school? At USC you’re looking at $350K+ just for tuition. UCLA Dental School runs about $250K+ just for tuition. Add on your housing + meals etc. Loans? What bank would give out that much in loans?
@Happy2Help Yeah I know what you mean! Those loans are crazy. My sister got $175k in loans for law school but could have gotten more if she didn’t already own a house so it is possible if you get the grad plus loans or something like that.
Thank you for addressing the CSU question. I thought Fullerton was beast when it comes to absolutely everything and I was all excited about applying and some “helpful” people were talking me down for it and made me feel like I was “selling myself short” so.
I’m SO glad that isn’t true because I would much rather pay $35k+ for school in my dream locale than to pay around that same amount at a school in Florida! No offense to that school and not to sound like I’m bashing FL because I’ve lived here for 11 years. But, I don’t want to stay here. I just hope that my courses from FL will qualify me!!! I would hate it if they wouldn’t accept my courses.
Honestly it is a travesty these loans are available to you. RUN, SCREAMING FROM THEM.
You would be a fool to pile up that kind of debt for an undergrad degree, knowing you’ve got years of DDS school ahead of you.
You need to find another path to your dreams…
Get your BS in your home state, move to CA, get a job, establish residency, then pursue your advanced degree.
Good luck
