How to prepare college audition

Hi, im Kerena, i am a current international high school senior student , i want to apply BFA acting programs. given to my condition my infos are limited and only based on my research on internet( im not in the states yet, very soon tho, within a month) and haven't got any chance to talk to the people who really knows something. so here i am, hopefully I can get some advises. (you have no idea how happy I was when i found CC by accident ;-P , i was a mess didn't know was i on the right track at all)

i have loads of questions and i know most of you have already answered those questions many times so i wanna say thanks in advance all answers would be appreciated!!!

from what i've learned the following schools have good acting programs
1. USC
2. UCLA
3.Chapman
4.CalArts
5.Tisch
6.SUNY purchase
what are peoples views on these programs anyone know of other good BFA programs ?(both east coast and west Coast are ok )

Audition Requirements
Because in china, Audition Requirements are not only 2 monologues and a interview but also incudes music audition, dance audition and impromptu acting. so im wondering will there be anything else they ask u to do besides monologues?

and how should i prepare
i went to pre-college course at the finest drama academy in china but i understand the acting methods btw 2 nations are different. so i applied a one year acting course in NYFA L.A campus ( i want to take a gap year to be well prepared and start BFA acting programs in 2012 fall ) to prepare my audition in Feb 2012. but I’ve heard this school is not that good (but this is the only one i can apply from china without waiting for I20 for half a year) so is there any other full time acting school, course, or summer session, or good privet coach to coach me at my spare time.

how import is resume, what kind of resume is considered good or stand out. and who is the best one to write recommendation letter? how many college should i apply to since all the programs are very selective and I will need backup plans if i dont get in places
.how difficult ? in china you have to make through 3 rounds of auditions so you can be the final lucky 20 among 8000+ applicants

Any recommendations that will make me better prepared and more competitive when it's time to apply to colleges? Should I get a college counselor or something?

thank you for your patient, and time :D

kat - Welcome, and good luck to you!

I think you should get a counselor who can help you learn and decide what you need to do in the States. There are a lot of choices, and a lot of different ways to get this training.

It’s hard for people to tell you if schools are “good” because there are lots of ways school can be appealing to students, and what is good for one person isn’t always good for another. It would be helpful if you talked about what kind of school atmosphere you like and what specific things you are looking for in a program.

Your preparation already sounds excellent. Most schools here require 2 monologues for Acting, and the music and dance are for musical theatre degrees, which are usually different and have a different set of auditions. The monologues are short - usually less than two minutes each.

Coming to the States and getting private coaching for a year might be a good idea, depending on how comfortable you are already performing in English, or if you don’t have enough time to research the schools you want to audition for (this is where a counselor can really help you). It probably isn’t necessary, or even a good idea, to enroll full-time in an acting school - transferring from one acting program to another here is usually more difficult than applying as a first-year student. But taking classes and having private coaching is a good option. We don’t know enough about you to say if it is the best for you, though.

Chinese competition sounds very intense! Competition for American Acting programs can also be very tough, at less than 10% of applicants, but there are also schools that accept more like 25-30%, and also schools that have wonderful programs that accept students based only on academics - so you can find schools that match your academic statistics and then choose to major in Theatre there.

Read the websites of the schools you like, or search their names on this forum. There are also several threads about California theatre schools specifically. We’re happy to keep answering questions as you develop your list.

In the meantime, if you can come to the States for a summer program, that is an excellent way to learn what you might need and get some advice, as well as a great learning experience in theatre. Carnegie Mellon, Boston University, the University of Minnesota and many other schools have summer programs. You can search for that topic, too.

thank you very much EmmyBet! ;D im planning to go to one of the summer programmes in UCLA. i’d like to study in a very artistic environment( wiz great people who share same passion and wonderful teachers) and get a great solid, acting technique( such as by classical acting trainning ) also can be comfortable at on-camera acting. at the end of the day i do wanna work in the film industry tho i really interested in plays and MT. futher more i hope i can not only become a better actress but also a better person through the programme.

i’m little confused . if i enrolled in NYFA for a one year course( with a certificate but not AA ) would that make me a transfer student?

Maybe one of our professional posters can answer that question. Otherwise you should ask at one of the schools you are interested in. It’s better to know than to make a mistake you wish you hadn’t.

you are right, it probably would be the best if i ask those schools that i want to apply to directly. :)
