How to Prepare for Grad School?

Ok, I am a sophomore Anthropology and International Studies major and am probably going to use 5 years to get my B.S.. But I am already wondering about grad school. The high school I went to was big on getting us to prepare for college when we were freshman in high school, and I am thinking it is the same idea for grad school.

I would like to get my masters and PHD in Anthropology with a specialty in Archeology. I have heard greats things about the department at University of Washington and would like to look into their program in the next year or two. But for now, what are things I can be doing to make sure I have better chances of getting into a good grad school program?

Obviously keep my GPA up.
I volunteer as a tutor at a youth shelter every week.
I am looking for more volunteer work.
I am going to study abroad for a term in a Spanish speaking program during my undergrad work.
I will be doing at least one summer of archeology field school.
I am getting to know my professors well and making professional relationships with them for references.

What else can I be working on right now?

Field schools and summer research are key.

It’s great that you do volunteer work (the youth shelter), but unrelated activities have no place on a grad school application.

Yeah I started reading through the thread at the top of the board and saw that. I do volunteer work anyways, I enjoy it, but it kind of sucks that it won’t help at all. Oh well.

I also was wanting to study abroad for a term. Would that make a difference at all?
