how to prepare for the best art colleges/

hello,
Please let me know how to prepare for the best art college.
High school student Interested in visual art, painting, designing and illustration.
Is the portfolio the most important factor?
And does it has to be prepared from when they are 9th grader intensively?
Thanks.

D did not choose art as her college path until Christmas of Junior year, so no you don’t have to prepare for years. However, she did take art classes all through high school and produced mass volumes of art because it was her passion. Get good grades in HS. Art school is expensive and the grades should make you a candidate for academic scholarships as well as demonstrate your ability to work hard. Portfolio is key. Would you get into music school without being able to demonstrate your performance ability? No. The same is true for visual art. Just my opinions.

Mom4Art’s D could be mine too. Mine didn’t realize that art could be a job until her junior year also. She came running down the school hallway waving a book she had just gotten from the library on careers in art, trying to catch up to her art teacher, and saying “I just found out art can be a job!”. Teacher said, I was wondering when you’d figure that out. She went to pre-college the summer between junior and senior year and had enough stuff for her portfolio for acceptance and merit aid. So yes, the portfolio is important. You don’t get anywhere without it. We did visit one university where you could be an art major and not have to have a portfolio until your sophomore year.
