I heard in order to major in art, you must provide the college with a portfolio. Is it too late for me to start creating my creating my portfolio in freshman/sophomore year? Also, I’m not taking an art class at my school. Do I have to in order to major in art? I’m currently a freshman in high school.
I highly doubt that freshman/sophomore year is too late to start. Just be prolific and produce a LOT of pieces and enter competitions, etc. See if there are any nearby galleries around that display student art, or maybe don’t show student art normally but would be willing to let you show a collection. I would recommend taking art classes either at your high school or from a private teacher. Take several throughout your high school career, preferably at least one per semester. It’s probably not required or anything, especially if your portfolios good, but colleges will want to see that you’re interested in art enough to take classes in it. You could make some connections with local artists, too, and see if they would mentor you. Not only would it be an excellent learning opportunity, but it would also provide unique letters of recommendation when you go to apply for art school senior year.
P.S. I am not an art major, so don’t just take my word for it - do some more investigating!
EDIT: There’s a “Visual Arts and Film Major” forum under College Majors, too. If you post there, you might get a few more replies from people who know what they’re talking about!
Thanks, this was really helpful! ^^
