I will be in Stern finance for my future college, and what sort of things do I need to do other than grade, to prepare myself for being a investment banker in the future? or in the other words, how to improve my chance to get more interviews and more offers from investment banks?

Obviously, after the GPA the other important parts examined are work experience and leadership. So, get an internship over the summer or during teh school year with an IB and show genuine interest in the field. Then go and become president of the finance club or something.

we can find a internship with an I-banking? will that be very hard?

find them out yourself. you have to learn to fail.

Simply go on all IBank websites.

They're hard to get into. Usually it's your university and general resume that gets you interview. From then on - it's all in your hands.

The competition is strenious, yes.

go to wharton.

Be prepared to answer questions like, why are manhole covers round?

definitely be prepare for your interviews...know how to do a DCF valuation, know basic finance (CAPM, etc.), know basic accouting (financial statements analysis), prepare for quick mental math questions (some of the ones I've had: "What's 12% of 63, what's the sqrt of 333 - approx. to 1 decimal place so ~18.3), prepare for brain teasers, etc.

^^^do they really ask those kind of math questions at an interview? How the hell can you find the sqaure root of 333 approximated to the tenths place, in your head?????

its easy though, you just do like 20square is 400 and 10square is 100 so 333 square root is 10~20 and then try 15 is 225 then is 15~20, and then narrow down and down till the right answer

yeah, but the tenths place...thats tough

I think we can still do it with in 1 min normally, and if we knew there ll be that kind of question I think we can do it in 30 sec

so what does answering these type of questions prove when it comes to the prospect of you working for them as an I-Banker

A couple of things: ability to think on your feet, critical thinking skills, your logic, etc. They want to see your thinking process. MC firms tend to do this more than ibanks I think. People might panic, which clouds their thinking. They just want to see how well you can think under pressure. I believe the field is all about high pressure.

I am guessing you want to do banking. Well here are some real life skills you will need when you are starting out:
-Be able to pull off multiple all nighters and still look fresh for meetings
-Be able to deal with arrogant and egotistical bosses who may or may not care about your needs
-Be able to multitask and conduct massive amounts of grunt work

All those thinking critically, and knowing brainteasers help until the interview. After that its all about the points I posted above.

pull off nights..... omg, I can do at most one night right now.... is there any way to practice that?

yeah dont sleep... and just to prepare even more while you're awake at 4 am you should get a binding machine and practice binding copies of pitch books over and over and over again. Also you could stay up all night staring at an excel spreadsheet...and if you're really ambitious model a joint venture capitalized with $100 million of Class A equity (with 10% current return and 15% preferred return), $30 million of Class B equity (25% preferred return), and $450 million under a revolving credit facility (don't forget the commitment fee! and interest of LIBOR + 200 bps)...the senior secured revolver matures 7 years from closing.

or how about you just go on coffee runs for your "boss" at 3am just so that you can be the best binder, analyst, coffee runner, etc.

see how fun banking is!!!!

That damn LIBOR....

I also thought instead of actualling binding the copies you are begging bloody mercy to the foreigners to finish your pitch book before someone elses.

"pull off nights..... omg, I can do at most one night right now.... is there any way to practice that?"

You know, I can't believe he actually asked that.

Yea same here...Practice???

If you can't do that then it's just not for you, I know for a fact I can pull off several all nighters and still be fresh in the morning, but pulling off several all nighters and then trying to solve the sqrt of 333....that's a different story
