How to pursue Latin in highschool?

I’m an incoming 9th grader who is interested in pursuing Latin intensively in highschool. Right now I’m taking an online Latin class, but I would like to have extracurriculars pertaining to Latin with the potential of participating in competitions and whatnot. How should I go about getting Latin extracurriculars? The highschool I will attend doesn’t offer Latin classes, so I doubt I could find four other people that could fit the requirement’s necessary for a Latin club to be registered with NJCL and become a chapter. Is it possible for me to join other schools chapters? If so, how?I don’t think I’ll be able to participate in competitions if I become a member at large so I’d prefer to join a chapter. Lastly, are there any other Latin extracurriculars out there? I would really appreciate any responses. Thanks in advance.

Does your local Community College offer Latin?
Have you talked to your Guidance Counselor? Are there any other programs you don’t know about?
Do any other local HSs offer it and is it possible to take it there?
Does your HS offer any online courses?

Can you take the national latin exam at some point? https://nle.org/

@bopper Thank you for replying. Sadly, none of the community colleges near me offer Latin. I’m not sure my highschool counselor would be of any help, I emailed her previously about if she had any Latin class recommendations and she didn’t know of any. I’m not looking to take a Latin class, I’m already taking one but I would like recommendations on how I can get Latin extracurriculars.

That NJCL seems like your best bet

I know many people who are members at Large (meaning the only person from their school) in my state delegation at convention, you should contact [insert your state here] JCL to look into becoming one.

@equestrian123 Would it be possible for me to engage in competitions at the conventions if I become a member at large?

Long shot chance. Do you have any Catholic High Schools nearby? They tend to have robust Latin programs. You might want to ask if you could participate in any of their events.

@Eeyore123 Are you saying that there isn’t a good chance I can participate in competitions at the conventions If I’m a member at large?

No, I meant that my suggestion is a long shot. Sorry for the confusion.

One idea would be to form your own group comprised of other students taking online Latin. This would show initiative on your college application. You could email your advisor at the online school and see if she he/she can send an email on your behalf to other Latin students in the program. Btw, where are you taking your Latin course? My D took first year Latin through BYU but she hasn’t been impressed. I’m looking into enrolling her in online Latin at our state university. Best of luck!

Take Latin 1, 2, 3 and AP.

yes

@GoldPenn , I’m taking Latin via BYU independent study. Do you think I could do your idea with BYU independent study?

@FantasyScribbler
I don’t see why not because the BYU Latin community is your community. The Latin teacher may even have some ideas as to what your group can do once formed. PM me of you set it up. I can give you my D’s info which would make at least a group of 2. She’s a rising Sophomore and she has taken one year of Latin at BYU.
