How to Recover From a Bad Freshman Year

I need help. I’m terrified.

It’s the end of my freshman year, my GPA is a weighted 3.4 and an unweighted 2.6 on a 5.3 scale. I got a D in second semester French. I’m in all honors classes except math and taking an AP class (my score hasn’t gotten in yet), but my GPA IS obviously shit. Everyone around me is doing better. Is my only hope community college? I just want the truth, I guess. I made it to sectionals in speech and debate, I’ve had a job since I was fourteen and I’m in the literary magazine, but I know I did awful this year. I just want to know my chances of getting into a public school, I guess. Thanks.

You are only a freshman. You have plenty of time to improve your academics. Do that and you won’t have to worry so much.

Sounds like misplaced prioritization of your time.

Yeah, you are right on that. The one good thing to come out of this stupid year is that I know where to put my effort more now.

I would agree with both of the above posters, but I would add that a lot of schools like to see an improvement throughout your 4 years. Their preferences change from school to school, but admissions officers looking for an “upward slope” in grades is not uncommon.
