How to sell yourself on your application without exaggerating or lying?

So I've been talking to some of my friends who got into Ivies, and they said the most important thing is to really sell yourself in your app. So I'm a bit concerned with the different between selling yourself and exaggerating too much. Where do guys draw the line?

I'm primarily talking about the descriptions of your EC's on an attached resume. Not about grades/scores or making up EC's. Just the description of them. Can you guys give me an example? Thanks.

I would say that if you are willing to show it to your parents, teachers, friends and counselors…it should be ok.

that sounds like a good rule =P

Just tell it like it is. My own resume doesn’t really include extensive, wordy descriptions (in fact, it can be easily skimmed over in 3-4 minutes max.), but it showcases different sides of myself. I’m a language nut, so there’s a section dedicated to the languages I’m fluent in, along with relevant language AP scores, SAT IIs, and corresponding awards. Then there’s another section showcasing my music accomplishments. Yet another section is a list of the countries I’ve traveled to. Of course, there’s also a section in the beginning for my academics and academic awards. In this way, I get to paint many aspects of myself, while keeping descriptions to a minimum.
