How to show low income on college apps?

I am very well qualified for financial aid (way under 50K, many dependents) and am a strong applicant in both academics and extracurriculars (not going to list here). I have been told multiple times to stress the low income part of my application, but am not sure how to without complaining about financial hardships. I don't think colleges see the financial aid part until after they accept/reject (need-blind admissions, right?) and was wondering how I can work this into my essays without being a whiner/downer? I feel that being low income has been a significant obstacle I've overcome many times; the experiences have definitely molded me as a person, and caused me to pursue things I wouldn't have otherwise had to.

If anyone has any advice, I would truly appreciate it!

Part of your school profile will indicate economic indicators of your school locale. The file readers will be acquainted with the relative income level of your HS.

I think they mean you should describe how you OVERCAME socioeconomic adversity in your essay, but I agree you want to minimize the adversity I and focus on how you are still a competitive applicant.

If you just want them to know you’re low income, it would probably be easiest to request an application fee waiver.

Write with a lousy pen.
