I'm a senior living in Georgia and I plan to go to UGA if I get admitted. I wanted to go to University of Florida, but since my parents moved here from Florida 10 years ago, I knew I couldn't consider an out of state school an option. Now the problem is, my parent's business has been struggling for a while now and plan to move to Florida within the next year or two. Dandy. Great. But will that jeopardize my college tuition because I'm dependent on them. Will I have to pay out of state by then since I can't be independent until I'm 24? I hope to take this chance and find a way to go to UF, but the residency requirements require that I live in FL for 12 months and get admitted before I can pay instate. Sigh, I even insisted that my parents move before my senior year so I wouldn't have to run into this problem, and now I fear it's too late. Please advise me how to handle this situation.

Check the rules for UGA. For most places…the resident status when you are admitted stays with you all four years…so you would be instate for GA for four years IF you are instate when you apply if that is their policy.

I agree with Thumper…most states base residency on when you first are admitted.

Frankly, I’m not even sure if schools check after that.
