I feel like I am just an average student, so how can I really stand out?

Run naked through the Quad!

Anyone else with some real advice? Thank you!

How about before you make a thread of your own providing absolutely no essential information about yourself, you take a little tour of the collegeconfidential forums. Use the little search button and do some research on general ways you can enhance your college apps.

The best response anyone can give to your extremely general inquiry is this: nothing average ever stands out. Stop being average.

Just being yourself is the best thing you can do, would you really do something you don’t want to do in order to try to impress colleges?

Why do you feel like you really need to stand out? If you’re just an average student, you’re probably not going to try for a very competitive school (or be successful in getting into one), and you just have to find a decent school where you can get in and be happy. To middle-tier schools where your GPA and SAT scores around the 50% line, a thought-provoking essay and good recommendations are enough to get you in.
(If you are actually average, and not a smart student who feels overwhelmed by looking at some of the protegees on this forum)

Well, here are my stats:

GPA: 4.6
Class Rank: Top 7%
Grade: I am a sophmore. I’m taking 9 more APs.
Leadership: Public Relations Chairman of Key Club. Teacher’s Assistant of SAT Chinese. Teacher’s Assisant of AP Chinese. Teacher’s Assistant of Pre-K Chinese. Youth Leader of Church.
Clubs: Key Club, French Club member. Environmental Club member. Human Rights & Justice Club member. Environmental Club member. Youth & Government. …NHS next year (Junior year)
Awards: Awarded in chinese & piano
Volunteer: Yes, I do a lot.
SATs: 2000+

I would like to stand out by letting the colleges know that I am very interested in languages. (Chinese: Took AP chinese, Took SAT chinese, AP Chinese teacher’s assistant, SAT Chinese class assistant, took Chinese for 10 + years) (French: Took AP French. French Club) (English: AP English, creative writing, newspaper) (Spanish: I will take spanish I and II senior year)…but is there any other way to show colleges that I am interested in languages?

Also, I’m trying to get as many awards and types of recognition as possible, could you guys suggest something?

Get a job translating, that would stand out.

hikids, that is an amazing idea!!Thank you so much
Do you know any opportunities?

clam fart for 11 years

lol…i remember that from another thread where the dude wrote that and got into princeton or w/e

hmm just do something you love and write about it

Shouldn’t a PR person know how to “sell” themselves?

Standing out (9 times out of 10) is grounded in either being born into a certain environment, having the right skin color, or training some obscure talent from childhood. Its not something you can procure in 2 years time. Standing out implies a uniqueness that is limited to a few, which is why most people cannot standout. You, perhaps, are just one of the many who blend together.

At the colleges you’re probably applying to, you really could use something special to put on your resume. I agree with the translating job idea, and also (it may be too late now) consider going to China or France over the summer to perform some sort of community service/missions project. A girl from my school, similar to you in interest, went to El Salvador two summers in a row for a month or so each time, and she got into Georgetown ED, with a declared major in Arabic.

God… a 2000+ SAT, 9 APs, 4.6 GPA… I pray I can someday be as “average” as you!

Sirensong, is the girl you described on college confidential? i would like to contact her about her trip. Do you know what its name was?

MGMT_Fan, yes i am one of the ones that blend together. That’s not what i want. do you have any suggestions on how to change that?

Thanks.

@tehcakeisaLIE-It was yale

Sorry, but I really have no idea whether she is on cc, or what program she went through. I apologize for being completely unhelpful…but maybe if you go to a guidance counselor they would be able to give you some ideas. Maybe just a google search…Good Luck

I would travel abroad to France or China and teach English there, or try community service or something. Language means an international relations sort of focus, so I’d look around for abroad programs!
Also, if you are Chinese, doing so much chinese language work is not impressive. But keep it up anyways.
