For the first quarter of my sophomore I have a C in AP World History if I am lucky, which is truly sad. After studying various colleges and finally having a goal, which is to get a 3.8 UW GPA by the time i'm out of high school and go to a prestigious college such as Chicago, Notre Dame, Vanderbilt, maybe even Columbia, and take the heaviest course load possible. Currently I really need help in raising my GPA which was a 3.5 in freshman year, and around a 3.2 in my first quarter, and my biggest problem is AP World. How did you study for your quizzes and tests in order to get an A on them? Is my goal to go from a 3.2 to a 3.8 uw almost impossible, or can I get at least a 3.8 for all 4 high school years?

What are your quizzes and tests like?

kkpanu9, My AP course is the hardest in my school from what I’ve heard, and my teacher grades really harshly since he wants to do well on our AP exam in the end. He tells us and esp. me that he is looking for the big picture in history and not extremely little details, which is what I am used to studying for since my memorization is better than average, and he also has many comparisons (such as comparing Han China and Rome) and DBQs and analyzing on the test, and not factual things. My teacher also almost never gives us notes and makes us outline chapters in the textbook, which is called Bulliet.

On my tests, I have gotten 68’s and after the practice essay I felt so proud of myself, because I thought i did everything right and could have gotten at least a 5 or 6, but instead I got a 3, which was the lowest score in my class and started crying after that, and felt like I would always need to be extremely disappointed in order for me to be satisfied. I’m not looking for pity, I just need to know if there is still hope for me to make it into a prestigious school, and how can I study for my quizzes and tests. My ECs are good (Competitive skater and I have a job as as a group lessons instructor and adaptive instructor) just in case you were going to say that gpa isn’t everything if I want to get into a selective school

Your class reminds me a lot of how my APUSH class was last year. My teacher would lecture but not give standard notes, we’d work on random DBQs, analyze documents, etc… I had come from CP level, to honors, to AP, so I was really overwhelmed at first. But it all worked out! Read the book as much as you can, make yourself quizlet questions if that helps. Study with other people who are in the class in the morning before the test. Go for extra help if the teacher offers it. I know that seems random since usually you do extra help for math or science, but don’t rule out history. Buy one of the AP test prep books and go along with what you’re learning (I like Kaplan’s.) Have faith in yourself!

Im in APWH right now too the only way to get high As on all the tests and quizzes is taking notes on all the pages that you read in the book and study all those notes the night before the test!
