Hi, I'm currently a High school senior, and It's now around that time of year where every senior gets their college decisions in the mail. My grades have recently plummeted, and not surprisingly, as a result, I have been rejected by most of my schools. I do not mind going to a lower tier school since I honestly do not think I have worked to deserve a place at my dream schools. I was hoping that maybe I could transfer after the first year at maybe Temple University. Is there any advice you guys could give regarding my chances for transferring, and how to utilize my freshman year in college most efficiently in order to transfer? Here is my current situation:

I got a 2380 on my SATs and I took them once: Math- 800, Crit. Reading- 790, Writing- 790

SAT Subject Tests were as following: Math II = 800 and Biology(E)- 770

High School Rank: was in the top 10 in a class of 500 freshman year, but subsequently plummeted when I started working about 45 hours per week at my family business due to economic circumstances.

High School GPA currently unweighted now is about a 3.2 after dropping considerably.

Temple University has offered me an excellent financial aid/scholarship package, and I do not think I would mind going their for my first year. The dream schools I was hoping to maybe transfer into were Cornell or the University of Pennsylvania. Keep in mind these are my dream DREAM schools for transfer. Are there any tips I could get to make my chances as good as possible? Thank you in advance!

Edit
Sorry and I was looking to major in biology or nursing in order to eventually go onto medical school, if this makes any difference. Thank you!

Thank nvilla! (: Is there anything else I should be doing to better my application? Internships, extracurric’s, etc.? Just any tips for somebody hoping to transfer would be appreciated. Thank you!

I would say, once you get to Temple, try and take advantage of as many opportunities as possible, particularly any leadership positions. Also, get to know at least two of your professors - upper-tier schools, like the one’s you’ll be applying to, will probably want one or two recs. The better you know them, the stronger the rec will be.

Then again, who knows? Maybe you’ll like Temple! Keep an open mind going into it, apply to transfer, and when you get your letters you can make a final decision.

I agree with nvilla. Your SAT score will carry the dead-weight from a bad HS record, IF you get 3.6 (3.8 for your dream schools) or above in college.

Once you get to Temple, take as many high level classes as you can, and make sure you are taking courses that will be required for your major at Cornell at UPenn. If you are planning on transferring for Fall 2011, take at least 1 sophomore level course or higher your first semester. Granted this much easier with AP credit, but keep your eyes peeled for a hidden gem in the social sciences or English! Again with your SAT score, all you have to do is get a 3.8, then “market yourself” on your application and you will be a very competitive candidate.

Thanks guys! and diontechristmas, Temple is definitely not an easy school at all, and it’ll provide a great education. I’ll definitely need to work my butt off, but I think it’ll hopefully pay off in the end. Once again I really appreciate all your input. Thank you!
