how do you weigh gpa. I know colleges unweight them, but I see people with over 4.0's and wonder how. What value do AP classes, advanced classes, etc get?

Though the weighted system comes in various shapes and flavors, your unweighted GPA will be calculated by an average awarded in a A=4 B=3 C=2 D=1 point system. In most cases certain courses will be given an extra point based on their difficulty. Making a A worth 5 points.
For the University of California systems, all AP, IB courses and certain approved Honors courses will be weighted.

thanks for the reply
this might sound like a stupid question but do you get 3.66 for A- and 3.33 for b+ or 4 for A or A- and 3 for B+, B,B-?

what would my weighted gpa be here
Regular English A-, A-
AP Euro B+,B+
Regular Chemistry, A-, A
Advanced Math (no such thing as honors at my school but I'll be taking BC calc senior year) A,A
Advanced French (same thing) A,A
Photo A,A-

From what I have heard from little birds, an honors course is worth roughly a .2 weight, an ap grade is worth a .3 weight. At least, that's how colleges look at it. Each HS weights differently, however.

In a few schools a A- and A really do make a difference in GPA. Depends on the school really. Ask your teachers about the school's GPA policy.

In a Los Angeles county GPA policy you will recieve a UW GPA of 3.83 and a Weighted GPA of 4.0.
