How to write a good Why This College essay?

I'm starting to work on my "Why ________" essays now, and while they're shaping up pretty easily, I want to make them more interesting. Some sort of writing hook, something to make them more colorful, so that I not only show that I know and love their college but hold their attention in the process.

Ideas?

same here, i just feel most Why (insert college here) essays get a lot of the same responses that pretty much any random person could write. No matter how much I love that college, its hard to convey without actually visiting the college. People who didn’t visit the campus tend to get screwed on these kind of essay prompts.

i finished mine. the best idea is to not use a cookie cutter molded essay for every college. write an essay that is specific to each college, this will make them think you did your research. pm me if you need any revision help.

Reposting this from another thread because it seemed to help that poster (http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/college-essays/1054667-what-do-dreaded-why-our-school-essay.html#post1066112055):

Thanks! That sounds like great advice. I already did that for one of my colleges, actually, without knowing that it was considered something helpful. I shall see if there are any professor-written papers from other colleges that pique my interest :)

There was advice in the Brown forum suggesting that “Why” essays should not only be about why the school fits you but why you fit the school.

^^I have been cautioned to not mention names in a why college x essay. Would it be strong to mention just the specifics of the research?
