How tough is the competition for the premed students at UCLA?

Depends on what you mean...

elaborate on your question and i could give a better response o_o

How's the environment in the upper divison classes? Someone told me that her sister said that there are some really HARDCORE pre-meds who won't help you (especially when compared to the lower divison classes). But someone else told me that the classes are a lot better because everyone can get to know each other on a more personal level since the class sizes are smaller. (I'm planning on majoring in physiological science by the way.) Ugggg... can't wait until I start my upper division classes where I can actually study something that I'm interested in =.=

Are you Asian?

the core upper div core phy sci classes (107 and 111 series) are all huge. ~200 people. you will see familiar faces, but you most likely wont know most of them.

upper div phy sci electives can be smaller. you can make friends, but usually by that time people will already have their groups that they hang out/study with. so its more like people are already set in their group of friends, not that everyone is all pre-med and purposely not helping the "competition".

Yuppp, I'm Asian, but I don't see how that's really relevant lol. (Well, actually I think it would be more accurate to call me a banana: white on the outside, yellow on the inside ahahahaha jk jk) How are the phy sci classes? I heard that you mainly memorize a lot of things? Or do you also apply those things to different situations (like on a critical thinking level)?

when did bananas make the color switch?

oh whoops haha. I meant yellow on the outside, but white on the inside. My brain is still recovering from the midterm I had today =.=

We don't take kindly to your types in here.

ahhhhhh ok ok, I'm sorry I'm sorry. The whole banana thing was just a joke; it's supposed to be a synonym for "Asian" or "American born Chinese." I didn't mean to imply that I pretend to be someone who I'm not :( What happened to the main topic of this thread???

how smart are you? if youre genuinely smart, ucla will be no prob for you. the classes arent hard at all.

if youre semi-smart though (ie need lots of time to study, dont always pick up things fast), then i can see it being hell. the pre meds with B and C averages can be pretty vicious.

The premed atmosphere here at UCLA is like rainbows and butterflies on a sunny day. After someone gets a question right in discussion, everyone gives this person a High-Five and smile warmly. The atmosphere is so friendly that people distribute notes to each other and call each other friendly nicknames like bud, bro, and guy.

Uh, Pre-meds?

Aren't you one?

Hmmm... I think I would classify myself as around semi-smart depending on which topic I'm studying. For example, I didn't enjoy AP government at all, but after spending some time prepping a couple of weeks before the exam, I surprisingly ended up with a 4 on it. But if the topic is related to physiological science, anatomy, etc., I naturally do much better because I'm actually interested in what I'm learning about. (I took 2 years of anatomy at my high school.) I'm a hard worker, but that's not necessarily a good thing cause I think college (and life in general) is about working "smarter," if that makes any sense at all. After doing poorly on my first college quiz (chem 14A...), I realized that my tactic of memorizing everything isn't going to work here, especially because there's simply too much information. So yeah, I'm working on figuring out what type of questions will most likely be on the test, proportioning (and being more efficient with) my study time, and using my spare time to have fun with college life.

But anyway, what are some things you like and dislike about phy sci? I heard how someone almost got sick of it cause the class was spending so much time on muscles. But personally for me, I imagine that it wouldn't bother me.

ah u took the chem 14A MIDterm? how did you do? i think i did ok

it was great. honors was fun too.

i think nearly EVERYONE missed the hybridization of the two triple bonded carbons in benzyne. i missed it too. from what he taught us, it would be sp for both (what i put), but apparently its sp2 from what i read online about it.

hopefully he didnt realize it and we all get it right.

I was expecting more tricky questions, but the midterm was good.

For the hybridization of the 2 triple-bonded carbons in benzyne, it IS sp for both. Check out the student solution manuel on pg SM-109. I guess that means almost everyone got it right then :)

I have another question: For premeds planning to take summer classes in order to free up their schedule during the school year, which classes do you recommend us to take? (Cause I'm currently planning to take physics during summer...)

yay then i got it right.

but it really IS sp2. this is where i read it:
Organic Chemistry - Google Book Search

that actually makes me really happy.

its hard for sure
i took my first chem and math midterms and basically said byebye to premed right after taking them
