How useful has it been to you? For me it wakes me up every morning and I charge my batteries from the university so electricity is free.

Also how often do you guys get a new phone or laptop?

Also how often do you guys get a new phone or laptop?

Very useful, I get emails on it, use it as an alarm sometimes, and can get news as fast as possible most of the time.

I get a new phone whenever my upgrade comes up, unless I’m waiting for a newer model to come out soon (like right now). My upgrade for my iPhone 3G came up in April, but I’m waiting until the iPhone 5 comes out because either the price for the 5 will be good and I can get that or the price for the 4 will drop and I can just get that for cheaper.

Is it lame that I don’t have internet for my phone?

I use a Blackberry and I am dependant upon it for everything (Though, I am also waiting for the iPhone 5). It isn’t lame that you don’t have internet, but once and if you get it, it will be hard to not use and to get rid of it. My web access has saved me many times (Plus, you can now pay with your phone in some locations or use it as a ticket, etc. It is pretty sweet).

But I use my phone to kill time, write quick e-mails to professors, go online, look up directions/addresses, use as an alarm clock, stay in contact with EVERYONE… I am lost without my phone. It is pathetic how much I depend on it.

I am getting a new Macbook Pro this summer and giving my 3-year old Macbook to my dad. Though, I am only upgrading my laptop because the programs I like to use (including Logic) will freeze up at times on my older processor. If I didn’t use this kind of program, I’d keep with my laptop until it died.

I have a Blackberry that I bought off of ebay about 8 months ago (about $90 for a model still sold in stores). My older Blackberry I had for two years. I have been putting off my upgrade for 6+ months waiting for the next iPhone for Verizon (iPhone 5). I took a gamble, but really, I didn’t want to be stuck with the iPhone 4 and have it be older technology within 6 months because Verizon didn’t get the phone until this past winter. Besides, Apple has annouced new phones every summer, so I’ve been waiting on this.

I do not have a cellphone and it is a major inconvenience. There is just no way anyone can contact me. But I can not afford one either. I’d probably use a calender app to keep track of my assignments and sync it with my calender at home.

@Yiehtk – Can you afford $25 a month for a lot of unlimited features? There are cheaper options than that out there as well…

If your campus is fully wired, you can save a bunch of money by just buying a little netbook and using wifi on that.

A cell phone is completely necessary. Considering I’m on campus from usually 8 or 9 in the morning until 8 or 9 at night, I usually couldn’t be reached on a home phone, so I don’t even have one. I use the $25/month Virgin Mobile plan and my phone was only about $60 and was a Christmas present from my parents. The phone I had before that in high school cost $10 and I just bought minutes as I go, but I’ve found that texting works better as a way to leave a message for me when I’m in class or asleep, so I like having unlimited texting.

My phone has the capacity to use internet but I don’t usually do that because it kills the battery too quickly. My battery will die with only about 15 minutes of internet usage but will last a week between charges if I don’t use internet on it. I usually have my laptop with me and wireless internet is free throughout the entire campus, so there’s usually not much point to it.

I honestly don’t know how I would manage without a cell phone. I am completely dependent upon it.

Extremely useful. Almost every college student I know communicates primarily via text message. Right now my phone is broken and I keep thinking of doing things and realizing I can’t because my phone is broken. (Like texting my boyfriend and finding out how soon he will be back because he’s out helping his elderly neighbor and I’m here at his house with nothing to do…)

Imperative.

Why, you can text during class lectures, like all the cool kids do.

I use my phone for everything. I check my email, talk to people, use the alarm, store my notes, take pictures, check my grades online, use the dictionary app, and find my way around with the gps.

I have the iPhone 4, and I honestly have no idea what I would do without it at this point. it’s just become really ingrained in my life.

I would say cell phones are necessary for most college students. I don’t have a data plan or any kind of internet access, but my cell is the only way people can reach me when I’m at school. I get a new one every two years when I have an upgrade.

I don’t have internet on my phone, but other than that, I depend on it a lot. I couldn’t survive without it.

How do you guys afford such expensive accessories? Do you guys spend all of your savings?

Are you waiting for the Macbook Deal this summer? Are Macs worth it? What is your major?

OP, you’re not lame b/c you don’t have internet on your cell phone - I don’t either.
But my cell phone has been extremely useful to me, especially during the first month of college which was hard for me and during which I was very homesick.

I have a simple pre-paid plan - $40/mth for unlimited texts and calls. I have a cool looking phone with a QWERTY keypad so it’s not lame imo. lol. I’m not much of a texter so it works fine for me. I don’t really need all the bells and whistles. I text occasionally, talk on it even less and use it for an alarm clock nearly every day.

I use my cell phone to call and text, as well as set alarms. I don’t use my calendar, and I don’t have internet on my phone either. I think it’s great and I love having it, but i could certainly survive without it.
