Internet on Cell Phones?

Since most of you probably have your own laptops, do you use your phone to access the Internet very often? (Does your phone even have Internet capabilities?) How good is the reception on your campus? Is it worth the money to pay for Internet service on your phone?

I personally don't have Internet service on my phone. I think it's kind of a rip-off, especially since I already have a laptop I can use to access the Internet. However, I see a lot of people around campus using their phones to go on the Internet, so I'm wondering if I'm missing out on something.

So what do you think?

I don’t use my phone for the internet at all. I would if I could but we don’t have it on my plan, so it costs an arm and a leg.

Texting and a laptop is more than sufficient to be “wired” pretty much all the time. It would be nice to whip out my phone to check my email but it can wait the 10 minutes I have my laptop off as I walk between classes.

I have a BB Tour along with Sprint’s Blackberry Data plan, so I use the net on my phone quite frequently. The speeds aren’t amazing, but it gets the job done. The phone is really convenient since all of my e-mails are instantly forwarded to my phone, leaving the process of checking my e-mail manually obsolete. Of course, if I’m on my laptop, I’m not going to purposely use my phone to access the net, but if I’m in a location which is bereft of pcs and I need to look something up, then I’m in luck.

I’m still in high school, but I do use the internet on my phone relatively often. It’s not iPhone quality or anything, but I find it nice to be able to check my email if I’m anticipating something or go on facebook occasionally if I’m in a place like a waiting room.

I don’t use internet on my phone, I don’t think its very internet capable. Unless I was some important business person that needed to check e-mails and the like often, I see no point. I just don’t need to use the internet that much.

I use the internet on my phone a lot actually for news, facebook, and weather. I have a BB so pretty much it is quite expected and the internet fee is mandatory so yeah.

I have the T-Mobile G1 with the data plan and use Internet on my phone allllll the time. My school doesn’t have wifi in every building and I don’t lug around a laptop often, so my phone is very convenient. I’m usually checking email/twitter/fb at least once an hour or weather/news every so often, and I’m also an impulsive googler (random thought/question, must find answer!) so I think I get my money’s worth out of the plan. I rarely use the phone part though, barely touching my monthly minute allotment, and when I do it’s usually nights/weekends or mobile-to-mobile.

I’ve always had 3G at home, but the area around my school just got 3G, so using my phone for Internet doesn’t wear on my patience as much anymore since it’s pretty fast.

I’m pretty similar to technol. I too have the G1 and use it rather often. My campus is pretty much all wifi enabled, but I have 3G everywhere so it doesn’t matter. It’s convenient for when I get lost or when I’m expecting something important online. I use it a lot for work so it is pretty much a necessity.

I do not use the internet on my cell phone, it might get infected with a virus, and then I might catch it and get sick. I do not want a cell phone virus in my body during finals. No way Jose.

^ You really have way too much time on your hands if you ■■■■■ CC.

I do. My BlackBerry Tour requires a data plan, and that’s kind of included with my Sprint phone plan, so it’s all good. I also get unlimited texts and unlimited calls to any cell phone in the US, and free roaming on Verizon if I’m out of Sprint’s coverage area. Sprint kicks ass to say the least. I think I used 1000 minutes one month, and it was all under their Any Mobile deal, which was very nice. My plan only comes with 450 ‘regular’ minutes so you can imagine how much I’d have had to pay in overage if they didn’t have this deal.

But yeah, it’s always nice to be able to pull up something on Google or Wikipedia. I also use data for things like Navigation, Facebook, Twitter, news, etc. Very useful!

I have an iPhone, and it pings every time I get an e-mail, which is super useful for checking whether classes have been cancelled or not while I’m on the go. My laptop is too big/heavy/fat/obsolete for me to bring around campus, so if I need to look at an assignment that is posted online while I’m at the library, that’s what I use. I also facebook/AIM-text people a lot with it. It’s more convenient than calling people cos they could be in class blah blah blaaaaah. I don’t have texting bc I have AIM.

To be honest, it is pretty much a rip off, all those things I just mentioned above aren’t necessary. The only BIG thing is the Maps, directions, and bus stop times on my iPhone. I frequently wander around and get lost and I always need to use it to find my way back :).
