I’m currently a sophomore at Cornell University in the College of Engineering, majoring in Biological Engineering. I’ve realized that with careful planning of my focus area electives and liberal arts requirements, I can get a biomedical engineering minor and an Asian studies minor without taking any extra classes. Would it be more useful to get those two minors or just take classes that I am interested in?
If you are not interested in those two minors, why are you taking classes in them?
I am interested in those minors, I’m just wondering if it would be more useful to diversify and take, let’s say, one class in CS, a class in business, or a Mandarin class, rather than concentrating solely on completing minor requirements.
I feel like you should take what you feel will allow for the most personal growth and allow you to tell a story that is relevant whatever your career path is. The benefit of a minor is that it gives you structure and a way to tell that story, but if you take relevant language courses, statistics, or coding courses that you feel like would be more useful to your overall career path, then go with that. Minors are usually not something that will make or break you, it is just an avenue in which you can present yourself.
