How was Chemistry 20B with Bauer?

I had her for 11:00 but then they switched up on me and gave me Tolbert. I'm wondering what I missed out on.

Although it’s hard to tell after the first day, she seemed nice and knowledgable. She came in with liquid nitrogen and did an experiment which was pretty cool. But she went kind of fast with her lecture. I was writing as fast as I could and trying to listen at the same time. Scerri’s pace seemed so slow compared to her’s, so if you’re used to his pace like I was then it’s a little bit of an adjustment. I was mad when I first found out that she wasn’t Tolbert, but I think she will be a decent teacher. How was Tolbert?

I went to both lectures. (Officially enrolled in Tolbert)

The two covered mostly the same topic, and it was about the same. I noticed at times Tolbert threw in some terms (only like 2 or 3), without explaining, that may have confused those who had not taken AP Chem. Tolbert did go more in depth than Bauer. Bauer seems a little more interactive/visual than Tolbert. She brought in liquid nitrogen and shrunk balloons to demonstrate the gas laws. I feel like I’m in high school again with Bauer. The class is smaller, and she uses a bit more simpler language. Bauer’s presentation was done with a some type of overhead projector (don’t know what they’re called). She’s a little more softer spoken than Tolbert, whereas Tolbert uses a mic and just the chalkboard.

Bauer says she puts up her slides online and Tolbert believes that students “should go to lecture” and doesn’t post online notes. Bauer assigns more homework than Tolbert, and honestly, I thought both Bauer and Tolbert went a bit slow for the topic (but then again, I didn’t take that many notes  ).

Overall, I can’t really say who seemed better. Bauer seems to be easier with the grading, but since she’s new, I am a bit concerned about the depth of her lectures. But I got really sleepy in Tolbert, so I guess having Tolbert would be worse for me.

Grading differences:
Tolbert - 45% final, 45% 2 Midterms (weighted equally), 10% HW
Bauer - 40% final, 40% 2 Midterms (Highest 25%, lowest 15%), 20% HW

(LOL, Bauer’s class had a “Josh” -Scerri lecture 3 reference-)

^ Oh I thought you were enrolled in lecture 1, sneaky sneaky. My roommate actually knows today’s “Josh”, but today’s “Josh” was worse without Scerri to put him down. :frowning: I miss Scerri in a strange way.

silvercross’s observations seem on par with what my roommate told me today

Why do I get this feeling that we all know each other in real life?

Anyways…Bauer reviewed Lecture 2’s stuff…so…it was pretty good for me…since even after reading the book I sorta got confused…

Anyways…her pace is juuuuust right. (I tend to copy down everything I hear…and my notes need to be recopied to be legible)

After going to both Tolbert and Bauer’s lectures for this week, I would say Tolbert is the better lecturer. From what I find, Tolbert makes a point of explaining where variables come from, what they represent, and most importantly, why they’re even there in the first place.

Bauer, on the other hand, seems a bit too focused on the math or certain aspects of the material that she misses explaining what was the point of what she just said. I feel like she just throws variables and equation deriving almost out of nowhere. What I found most bothering was that she sometimes did not say what certain variables represented. There is also an over-reliance on the slides she puts up.

Though, the reason why I might learn more in Tolbert could be that Bauer warms me up so Tolbert’s lectures make more sense. Anyways, if you want to learn Chemistry, I would definitely recommend Tolbert, though perhaps if you’re in it for the grade, Bauer seems like the better choice… (Note: I don’t know either professor’s exams style, so that I could be wrong.)

But then again, I’m the person who didn’t like Scerri and didn’t do so hot in his class either… Take that however you like.
