Im an international student interested in studing in the U.S next year but i am concerned about the leagal drinking age of 21? I will be 20 when I go! Will this be a big problem?
Do students under the age of 21 drink?
Is it difficult to get into pubs and nighclubs or get alcohol if your are underage?
Dose it vary in different states/colleges?
Also what are the consequence of getting caught?
Students past and present please give me some advice.
If you could say which state you are going to college in, it whould really help as i have certain states in mind!
It’s a strange situation. It’s illegal to drink if one is under the age of 21, but it’s in no sense really opposed to our social mores. Most people don’t really have much of an issue with people under the age of 21 drinking, and many people “look the other way” with regard to the laws.
Many students under the age of 21 drink, although to greatly varying degrees. There are a lot of nightclubs and pubs that will allow students under the age of 21 to enter, but not necessarily purchase alcohol.
Extremely difficult without a fake ID. Under 21 you can get in, but they’ll draw X’s on your hand/won’t give you a bracelet so bartenders know not to serve you/to take your drink away if a friend buys.
Yes, but not by much. It’s hard.
Slap on the wrist.
What most people do is get a friend who is over 21/has a fake ID to buy them alcohol from a liquor store.
What is it like in cities such as Washington D.C and New York?
Would the majority of students that are underage drink?
Does it differ depending on the level of university you go to?
