Maize out!
I never said Michigan was the only school with yellow as a color. Just that it makes it easier to spot when it is. And I wouldn’t count any of the California schools because they are too casual/cool to care. LOL
I suspect if you asked the next 100 people you see about the current Director’s Cup standings, far fewer than 1/2 would know (with many having never heard of the Director’s Cup). Same would be true for Domers and Buckeyes who are 2d and 3d respectively.
In terms of sports followings on a broad basis, its football and basketball by a mile. Not wrestling or women’s swimming.
You likely see a lot of people wearing gear from colleges with which they do not have any connection. You are just more likely to talk with people who are wearing gear with which you have a connection. Some of the biggest Ohio State fans I know never went to the school (and do not have family members who did either) and do not live in Ohio.
Are you saying that if Michigan was worse at sports (not sure how far down the Director’s Cup rankings they would need to fall for you to say that has happened) alumni would be less supportive of their alma mater? Guess I was reading all of the Michigan gear, sightings across the globe, etc to mean pride beyond sports but maybe that isn’t the case.
D18 just graduated, but she finished her school work last Fall (3 1/2 semesters). Her lease runs until July, but she doesn’t want to leave A2. Just depends on the person, but A2 is great town to live in.
Look, the thread’s intended purpose is about Michigan winters, so Michigan sports is a tangent.
So, I’d rather not argue the “why” Michigan clothing seems to be popular all around the globe. Could be because of its elite sports, could be because of its elite academics, could be because it’s always voted one of the best college towns in the US, could be because its large alumni base (I guess that means students graduate?), could be because of the school’s vibrant colors, could be because the Wolverine football helmet is very cool. It’s likely all those things and more.
Michigan is very successful in a plethora of sports. And my D and I follow many, including the hockey team, which went to the Frozen Four. And yes, from what I gather, Michigan alumni (I’m not one) do demand a successful athletic department, no doubt about it. And success brings more alumni donations.
There’s no bad weather, only bad clothing.
The weather can be adaptable! But I do recommend beginning a Vitamin D supplement to prevent being depleted - that’s something everyone north of warm weather states should be aware of (in consultation with her doctor - get her levels checked so she can dose appropriately).
Plus a good daylight desk lamp (or one that can change between daylight and low/warm light for evening).
But really, once you have the right clothing and footwear, one can adapt to the weather.
BTW, Michigan finished 2nd at the NCAA championships, to Penn State, but did win the B1G championship. And you would be very surprised at the large crowds they do get for the sport. I mean, who doesn’t like to see 2 people grapple on the mat for supremacy.
@sushiritto I will fast forward to where we ended up in the Big10 football/Covid thread a couple years ago.
OP–You know your kid better than any of us do. I know people in their 40s, 50s and 60s who have lived in the northern climates their entire lives who are miserable 3-4 months a year every year and effectively hibernate during that time. And many more people who just tolerate the cold/snowy winters here. They have never adjusted or learned to dress for the cold. For people used to warm climates their entire lives, the adjustment can be even more challenging.
Years ago, Wisconsin and Miami, Fla played in a night bowl game in Florida. If I remember right it was in the 40s for the game. The Miami players were wearing long sleeves under their uniforms, and hats and gloves and huddled around heaters. The Wisconsin players were in short sleeved jerseys playing a game like it was early October. How has your kid reacted to “cold” spells where you live now? If miserable, doubtful adjust to northern “cold” will go well.
Its easy to say you can dress for the cold. Many people really struggle to do that and are totally miserable with the cold. And that someone was able to come from the south or California and go to Michigan (or another northern climate school) without issue doesn’t mean your kid will do that. If you think your kid is one of those people, I would suggest North Carolina or Florida. Both are very good schools. Don’t think its worth being miserable essentially 1/2 the school year for 4 years the additive benefit of Michigan. Though would need to better understand the various reasons why Michigan is leading the pack for her.
I don’t think you need to embrace winter (as many people–including myself) do. But you need to at least be able to tolerate it. Being miserable isn’t worth it. At least not to me.
There are applicants to CA schools who worry about hot weather, fires and earthquakes. And there are applicants to schools in the South, like a Tulane, and I assume NC and FL, who worry about hurricanes. Some schools may have to worry about tornados or Nor’easters. Mother nature does affect locales everywhere.
Jay, I’m sure you know the American football experience is very different from soccer/futbol. Lot more brutal. Here’s a highlight reel: https://youtu.be/gl2qeEZFMc8
And the rest of y’all, Jay bumped this thread 2 days ago. Beezus, the OP, and her daughter have probably already committed somewhere warmer. Thought I saw a post about Rice.
@sushiritto, only UNC-Wilmington students really have to worry about hurricanes in NC. We do get tropical storms around UNC, Duke, NC State, but not too many worries about actual hurricanes in this part of the state.
And I hear “Go Heels” a LOT wherever I am. I don’t think Michigan has a lock on a loyal fanbase.
I think that it’s time to release a few OSU people into this thread for fun…
I think you can adapt to weather in about two to three days… I was born and lived in the South until I accepted a job in Russia where I worked in Siberia and near the Arctic Circle. For me, after about three days, the weather was not something I thought about very much…I would not let weather be a primary factor in deciding a life decision, although it is certainly a factor. Obviously, some folks might let it influence them more than others.
My daughter is a current student and I don’t see anyone with that bottom color. Is that the original color? We don’t have anything and I don’t see anything with the sunny yellow.
Ha! My husband feels that way about Ohio and Ohio State fans. He is in sales, so travels everywhere. He said the worst state and set of fans is Ohio State, in part because the whole state acts like they went there. Most states have multiple schools/allegiances, but Ohio seems to have a singular focus. Our younger daughter seriously considered Ohio State and I think it would have done him in!
We aren’t from Ohio or Michigan and we went to a really nerdy T25 school, so have no built-in loyalties or biases.
Where did the OP’s daughter decide? All great choices!
My spouse is one of those who wears Michigan clothing most days. It was hilarious when my sister sent us some Christmas ornaments she made that depicted each one of us. My spouse’s ornament was designed wearing a Michigan shirt, and happened to be wearing that same Michigan shirt on Christmas morning when the present was opened. And yes, there are frequent “Go Blue” comments whenever seeing someone else with UM paraphernalia.
Our child, however, has a favorite university…Ohio State.
This made me think of my all-time favorite ESPN commercial (warning college kids kissing)
Have you people experienced Nebraska fans? They travel in a wave, in their red RVs, wearing their red overalls, toting their red clad babies…it’s awful.
My nephew, who had never been to Wisconsin, parents didn’t go to UW (but Aunt did), could say a lot of B words as an 18 month old. Bird, boat, balloon, BADGER (and correctly identify it on a shirt).
There are a lot of people who tailgate at college football games who watch the game on TV under tents near the stadium. That never happened back in the day (tech wasn’t available and not sure people wanted to do it). But with portable satellite dishes and flat screen TVs its possible (I still have no interest but there are a lot of people who do). Increased traffic around stadiums on game days.
True story: Our son’s first intelligible words were “Go Boo!” Not mommy, not da-da…. He learned other words later that we had to explain were “football words” and not to be used outside our family room. On Saturdays.
Love is love, man. We all have to have an open mind for these things.
