At what point did/do your children say thank-you to people who have helped them along the path during college admissions? And what kind of thanks is appropriate? I'm thinking of teachers/professors who write letters of recommendations, counselors who give feedback on essays, mentors-people like that.

In terms of thanking people who wrote recommendation writers, I know many moms I talked to said they gave them a gift around the Xmas holidays (because at that point, all their letters were done). The gifts were varied – bottle of wine, gift cert to Costco, gift cert to local bookstore.

Once the letters were in (and confirmed received by the colleges!!) d hand-wrote a letter of thanks to each recommender and the guidance secretary, who did a lot of the grunt work, and delivered the same, along with some homemade cookies she made for them. I think I remember her doing these about the time of the November parent/teacher conferences…

D wrote hand written letters to any people at colleges where she had a personal interview or meeting with professors.

She thanked her guidance counselor and teachers who wrote recommendations and helped her along the way through HS with a gift at the end of Senior year. She gave them mugs from her college filled with candy and a gift card, along with a hand written note. All were very appreciative and most told her “No one ever thanked me before.”

Thank-you for the feedback. This is very helpful!

My son did send a thank-you and cookies across the country to a college where he’d been a participant in a special program, but he hasn’t done thank-yous for his recommenders.

Also, what’s appropriate for thanking someone you interview with? He has his first interview on Saturday?

Handwritten thank you note and Starbucks gift card to the teachers that wrote her rec letters. We will do the same for the GC after all apps are finished. We waited till after the letters were sent to give the thank yous…I didn’t want it to seem anything other than a sincere thank you!
I LOVE the idea of the college mug filled with candy…just wish there wasn’t the long time between the writing of the letters and the final college choice…I like a timely thank you note! (darn those miss manners classes from decades ago!!)

DS planned to give something from college of choice as well once it is all said and done. Guess he can give them to the teachers once he makes the big decision.

My kids did a handwritten note with a small semi-personal gift (e.g. Starbucks card to the coffee drinker, Donut card to the sugar fiend etc) once the decision was finalized in the end. There were larger and more personal gifts to important people in their lives, like the private music teacher they’d studied with for years, and more emotional partings.
