hello everyone. im currently starting my first semester at community college. im taking a class called fundamentals of music and another one called music literature and appreciation. i play the keyboard quite well but my main reason for being interested in music is the theoretical and historical sides to it not so much the performance part of it. im good at analysis and interpretation of the philosophical significance and aesthetic value of a certain song or album. basically i want to know at which point will i realize that a music major and music in general is right for me?
It sounds like you will like a major in music for a BA (as opposed to a BM). A BA includes theory, music history, composition, ehtnomusicology, music technology and other subjects that are academic as opposed to performance-oriented. It is 1/4-1/2 music classes with liberal arts requirements as well.
If you are planning on doing community college for two years, you might want to talk to someone about the best route for you to take to study music academically.
Some 4 year schools will take transfer credits in music from community college (or any college which you might be transferring from) because they have their own particular curriculum. You might want to try out music classes to see if you like them, but make sure they will at least transfer as gen eds or electives. And think about covering general education requirements for 4 year schools if you are interested in some, while at community college.
Does your community college have a music major or department? Perhaps you could make an appointment to talk wth someone in the department.
Good luck!
to your last question yes my college has a music department and they offer the core music theory classes, performance classes, and a few electives. and also an academic career sounds more appealing to me than a performance based one. thanks for the advice.
My daughter was a music major at a great college, but I would have to say that many of the best musicians didn’t even major in music
What you are seeking is an academic music degree, which generally would be something like music theory, music history, ethno-musicology, musicology and so forth (the degree names can be flexible). I would suggest you take some courses where you are, especially in theory, to see if you actually like it, some people love theory, some people don’t, and it might give you an idea of whether you like it or not.
A music degree like that, in terms of direct applicability, would be aimed at an academic track (ie getting a PHd then teaching), though obviously it doesn’t limit you. You could get a BA in music, and end up working the business side of music, in any area, or you could like any college liberal arts degree, end up doing something totally different, going to grad school for something else, or getting a job with that degree and doing something not totally related.
The real key is you have to love doing it, music whether performance or the academic side is not going to be easy in terms of career in music, or even getting the degree. If you want to go the academic route, it isn’t easy, teaching at a college level was never easy, and has gotten a lot more difficult, and like any general liberal arts degree may be a bit more difficult to translate into the kind of job you want (as opposed to specific skills kind of things, like comp sci or engineering). On the other hand, music majors of both sorts are also looked at favorably in a lot of cases, so it could be a boost if looking to change direction:)
Just be careful because some 4 year schools like you to take their own theory sequence. I there are specificschools you might transfer to, maybe check with them.
