How will I know what college is right for me when I have no idea what I want to do?

Hey guys, I have had a couple of other post's on here about pretty general subjects, but this is one I am really struggling with.

Here's my current status-

A's and B's student
24 Composite ACT
Full tuition & Room and board paid
Entering my Senior year

I can get into any college in my state (OK) private schools aside. I can go through college with basically everything paid.

There is only 1 problem and it is huge... I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT I WANT TO DO!

It bugs on me nearly every single day and stresses me so bad. I have my college choices basically narrowed down to a D1 college that will push my limits or a D2 school that I personally feel I will have no problem getting through. I read so much that it is important to go to a college that is strong in your major. So what is someone who has no idea what their major will be do?

I’d guess you do have some idea of what you want to do … try turning the question around … let’s see if we can eliminate some possibilites?

Is there a chance you want to be a peforming artist?

Is there a chance you want to be a writer

Is there a chance you want to be a teacher?

Is there a chance you want to be a nurse?

Is there a chance you want to be a doctor?

Is there a chance you want to be an architect?

Is there a chance you want to be an engineer?

Is there a chance you want to be an investment banker?

Etc

Eliminate those you know you do not want to do (for me no way I was going to be a performer, poet/write, or dentist for example). Then find schools that allow you to explore the large set of possibilities that are still in the mix. When I looked for schools I was looking 5 areas of interests. Interestingly having a large possibility set actually made for a relatively short set of school possibilities … in my case not many schools had all these Architecture, Engineering, Physics, Math, and Computer Science majors (especially when adding geographic and academic level preferences). I would think typically bigger universities are going to have the broadest choices for a student interest in a wide range of possibilities.

Two final thoughts. First, as a parent it seems more typical for a 16-17 year old to not know what they want to do when they grow up then to know … after all how can you “know” you want to do something you have not experienced at all yet? Finally, I believe the majority of college students change majors at least once … college is a time for exploration and developing self-awareness. Find a college covers your broad interests … take a variety of subjects … and enjoy! Good luck!

(PS - in my case I made into the second semester of sophomore year and still had no idea what of what I should major in (although I had eliminated more possibilities) … and then I took one class and immediately knew this was it. That was pretty late in the game but led to a pretty interesting 30 year career so far.)

Lots of valuable info! I want these two things to factor in Love for job + Money. I think what is hindering me choosing something is I do and love such a variety of things.
I love working on computer hardware and software but at the same time I love hunting and fishing.
I love being in depth with peoples mind and helping them but I also love doing crazy things myself!
I love playing sports but at the same time I enjoy writing and reading intellectual things.

I would love to be a psychiatrist but sadly my math and science skills are average at best because I despise math and biology. I feel I would drive myself insane studying so much of something I hate.

If you don’t mind me asking what do you do?

An important part of college for many is figuring out what you want to do. Choose a college that encourages you to explore options. (Hint: most do.) Go there with an open mind, and take advantage of a lot of different areas. Who knows? You might even decide you like biology!
