How will my parent’s death affect my aid?

My father just passed away recently. He was the one I could only put for my fafsa for the year of 2019-2020 (submitted the application in October 2018). Back in March I got to see how much aid I will receive. I’m unsure if his death will affect the aid I will receive for this upcoming school year. Will I still receive it? Should I contact the school?

Sorry for your loss. Yes, contact the school. Some assets won’t be reportable. You’ll probably ask for a Professional Judgment.

I’m so sorry to hear about the loss of your beloved father.

Is your mom alive? If so, then in the future you’ll be filling out FAFSA using her info.

Are you saying that upon the death of your dad, you have inherited his assets? And you’re concerned about how that will affect aid in the future?

Can you clarify and provide more info?

You will not lose the aid for 2019-2020 that you have been awarded. That is set. However, if losing your father means that you will lose financial support that would have come from his earnings that is critical for continuing your education in 2019-2020, do check with your financial aid office about “Special Circumstances” paperwork. There might even be a link right on their website. Completing that paperwork will allow them to review your aid package and possibly make adjustments so that you have access to more aid and/or different forms of aid.

Wishing you all the best in this difficult time.

2019-2020 is my last year. I do not need to file for fafsa again since I graduate in May 2020.
