How would you rank these Florida schools?

Florida State
University of Central Florida
University of Florida

I am in Florida and am aware of the general consensus around here, as well as the U.S News rankings, admissions stats, etc.; I am just curious to see what the perception is regarding these schools outside of Florida.

Im in Washington ( state), so its safe to say that Florida schools are not often mentioned and would be interchangeable unless you * really* cared about football.

I am in Boston, and I think U of F handily enjoys the best reputation here (which is not to say it is necessarily the best choice for you).

UFl
Florida State
UCF

Music is an exception. Florida State is better than both the others in that case.

I can’t imagine anyone outside of Florida much distinguishes these from one another, which may or may not be justified.

And to add insult to injury, the majority of people think Miami University is in Miami!

(Of course, not us enlightened CC folk!)

I think people in the Northeast who know the difference between Penn and Penn State and can actually name the eight schools in the Ivy League would rank them

UF

FSU

UCF

As far as anybody else is concerned (i.e., the vast majority of the population!), UF and FSU are interchangeable, and they’ve likely never heard of UCF unless they’re bigtime football fans! ;-)

Based on other state schools I’d assume that “University of [State]” is the best, “University of [Direction] [State]” is the worst, and “[State] State University” is probably a little below the best.

The first time I ever heard of UCF was years ago when the valedictorian in my son’s high school class (in New England) decided to go there for their film program. (Everyone was stunned at his choice since he was easily an Ivy-caliber student.) Except for seeing mentions on CC, that was also the last time I heard of it. Most people in the Northeast barely have a handle on the relative prestige of the state flagships; the other state schools are pretty much unknowns.

UF
FSU
UCF

All good schools.

As a northerner, I knew about Florida and Florida State more than UCF. But until I applied to Florida for graduate school, I usually asked when I heard UF or FSU mentioned “is that the one in Gainesville or Tallahassee?”

No way could I tell you which school has a “better” reputation our higher rank, even now.

Thanks, all!

I also grew up in the Northeast and went to school “up North”, as they say down here. When I first moved down here, I don’t think I knew much, if anything at all, about UCF. I knew UF and FSU to be state schools where football was big, but I probably didn’t know much more than that.

Yes, locally UF is our state flagship and generally considered the best, as well as the most difficult to be admitted to. Regarding which is 2nd best, it used to be FSU, but nowadays, it depends on who you talk to. Some say UCF has risen in the rankings and is now better than FSU. I perceive the two to be pretty similar and comparable in my own “personal” rankings.

I was just curious whether my perception has been skewed from living here for several years or if things have changed regarding the reputation of our state schools. It sounds like the current reputation of these schools (from a national perspective) is pretty much the same way as I remember it to be from back then.

Uf
fsu
usf/ucf
unf

quote

He he…I love this! So true. ;)

You could add in New College, in Sarasota.

UF, especially Honors. Also UF in Jupiter, all Honors program, near to Scripps LAb. Then Fl StATE.

For film, and hospitality, UCF, because of proximity to Universal/Disney for internships.

Agree with post 7

was just curious whether my perception has been skewed from living here for several years or if things have changed regarding the reputation of our state schools.
I think you’re being generous to suggest that they have “reputations” nationally. They’re unknowns. What do you think of the University of Montana?

People in the south know the state schools in nearby states, just as people in the midwest have some knowledge of the differences between Iowa/Iowa State or Illinois/Northern Illinois.

UF has the best reputation of the three and is doing a lot to increase the caliber of its student body. (Its 25/75th ACT percentile range is 26-31–incidentially, the exact same as U of Illinois). FSU is still known as a party school but has a good reputation in some areas (including a fantastic dance program led by Suzanne Farrell). UCF I would say is less known outside of Florida.

Well, in the USNWR 2013 college rankings of public universities, University of Florida is ranked 14th and University of Montana is ranked 117th. Even if these two schools both may be less nationally well known than some other state flagships, I would venture to say that these two may be on different “tiers.” I am sure people who go to University of Montana are happy with their education, but something(s) about University of Florida resulted in it being ranked more than 100 points higher. I think that even if the public universities in Florida listed by the OP are not nationally well known, there are differences among them, not limited to rankings that should be considered.

UF is the most highly ranked public university in the Florida. I agree with the person who said FSU has a very strong music program.

UF is the only one in the AAU.
