@Nedcone @cosmeux @Chopinspiano Congrats guys! I finally got my acceptance yesterday, now I’m waiting for scholarships, if I get any, that is.
Full ride +$500 for books my parents started screaming lol. We are literally drowning in debt with my brother’s tuition so this is a breath of air. @ThatPeprika @Chopinspiano Thank you!
If you qualify for a scholarship based on the criteria and you don’t get one I would call them. I applied in Dec-Jan and still got the one I qualified for. twitter.com/juicylorr/status/661553018211577856 has the new requirements even though they still name them founders, capstone etc instead of Tier 1, Tier 2. Goodluck to everyone!
@cosmeux Thanks for the link! I was wondering what the scholarship qualifications were, and I didn’t find any specific details about scholarships on their website. I definitely qualify for at least Tier 2, I just hope they still have scholarships left to give and that I didn’t get my decision back too late (y’know, with the whole first come/accepted first served basis thing).
But yeah, congrats to you again! That must be a whole load off for you and your family lol.
I have a question. I see some students being awarded Capstone but their awards are higher than mine? Can anyone explain that? :-/
I don’t get what you are saying @Chopinspiano
@cosmeux I thought that all awards covered the same. For example: Capstone should cover tuition and room but my award is less than $25k and others are $32k who were awarded Capstone as well. How is that possible?
How do you know your specific award? I only see founders. I can’t see the specifics of my scholarship @Chopinspiano
Wow now I’m worried I thought they were all the same
@Chopinspiano It might be because other people’s tuition and room cost more than yours. Not everybody’s CoA is the same. For example, someone may be majoring in a STEM field, so their tuition is higher, so their award is higher too. Also, maybe the residence hall they will be staying in may be more expensive, so that would increase the award too.
But that’s just an educated guess. The differing awards may be because of a completely different reason lol
Anyone know how to check the specifics of their scholarship?
Ok I found it. You have to log onto bison web and find your scholarship under financial aid. Open the odd and make sure you get the amount you expected. @Chopinspiano
@cosmeux my amount was within a second email that they sent me.
@ThatPeprika my major is within the STEM field and it wouldn’t make a difference for the different tuition unless you’re graduate. Howard doesn’t have instate vs out of state. I don’t think an approximate $6k is a difference in room and board. Meal plans are in the hundreds the highest dorm is approx $4700 and the lowest is about $2300. It doesn’t add up.
@Chopinspiano I called Howard admissions and they clarified that awards are for set amounts with respect to Founders and Presidential but EFC is used for Capstone. Laureate and Legacy no longer exist. I tried to get a direct answer as to whether FAFSA was required to recieve Capstone but I got a repetition that gpa, test scores and EFC are used to determine the amount of the award.
I am not expecting much of anything for my son because he only qualifies for Capstone and we didn’t even fill out FAFSA. This will put Howard on the chopping block because we counted on the full tuition + room scholarship to make Howard competitive with other offers.
@JAMCAFE Thank you. That’s really frustrating to hear.
I am so confused. I thought there was only Tier I- Tier IV as far as the scholarships go. I thought they got rid of the names?
@mtjones1 apparently not. The new admission office changed a lot of things. -_-
Maybe they were only considering Tiers because the website still has the names but obviously the site is still showing outdated info. Howard is reputed to be disorganized but this year’s change in scholarship awards without notice will likely affect yield. Hopefully applicants have an affordable option.
@JAMCAFE You are right. It looks like this year they decided to wait until they received your FAFSA and figured in your EFC to decide how much of the award you receive. This is distressing because we were counting on receiving what was offered on the website under Capstone – FULL TUITION, FEES & ROOM. If my daughter meets the top end of the requirements, she should receive the full award. If they were changing the process this year, that should have been made clear on the website. This will make us remove Howard from the list.
