Hi there,
I'm a high school senior and soon going to college in a couple of months. I chose my major as mechanical engineering. I like knowing how stuff is built and then making it myself. I hope to get a Master's degree someday. Just wondering though, what's college like as a mechanical engineer major? Are the classes super hard? I've heard that it can be a pain, but I've also heard that you can both pass classes well and have a social life. What's the real deal? Does being a girl also make any difference? Thanks for any input!

Engineering programs are generally very rigorous and require excellent math skills. Whether the curriculum is hard really depends on the individual student. I have see many students struggle and many others breeze through.

At my university, [Illinois Institute of Technology](http://www.iit.edu) we have lots of engineers and many of them are Mechanical. The curriculum is challenging and the workload is high but students usually are able to have a social life if they so choose. The Student Government usually has activities available and if a student wants to start a club it is always possible.

Finally, it is great that you are female. We need to encourage more women to enter the engineering field. There are all too few of them traditionally.
