How's the neighborhood around Rice University?

What do you mean by RUPD has a little TOO much free time at night, silentsailor? Have you ever run into problems with them at night?

I am told that somewhere in the archives of the Thresher, there is a photograph of one of the campos flying-tackling and cuffing, with greatly enthusiastic gusto, a drunken upperclassman dressed as a banana. The banana was crashing matriculation.

This would've been in the early nineties. I have never confirmed that this is true, but it comes from a reliable source, and I know the officer pictured, and I can certainly imagine him enthusiastically arresting a drunk banana.

RUPD takes their job quite seriously.

I've gone running at night with my roommate around Herman Park (I'm talking past midnight) and yes there are homeless people sleeping here and there, but that's about the worst thing.

Really?!?! I'm assuming roommate = suitemate and that is NOT who I would have guessed you were.

P.S. have a good break
(p.(s).s. yeah I think I'm super clever =P)

Edit: to contribute something to the thread, I am going to run the outer loop in about ten minutes and will probably be fine. To contribute something else, they're going to improve the lighting around the outer look starting next year (most of it now is blocked by tree cover), which will hopefully make people feel more safe.

No actually it's roommate lol, which is why I said "roommate" =). If I was lying I might as well have said "friend" or "someone from Jones" (ew).
Who do you think I am? I'm curious now... PM me =)

a) People at Jones can't run (self-consciousness is a prerequisite to self-improvement)
b) I've never had any alcohol-related run-ins with the cops. I did see them doing donuts in the golf carts out at west lot one time plus all the other stuff on the grapevine.

I've noticed a lot of people from the Houston suburbs tend to have the attitude that anything around downtown is dangerous (something about being outside of a gated community scares them I think), so that might be where your friend's comment came from.

I wouldn't advise running the outer loop by yourself too late at night (I run pretty late, but I usually manage to drag a friend along with me). Despite the bubble effect that the hedges can give, it is in the middle of a large city. You should take standard precautions, but safety isn't that big of a concern. The only crimes you really hear about on campus are bike thefts.

Actually the most common crime on campus is probably underage drinking, followed by serving alcohol to a minor, public indecency, and disturbing the peace. Other than that and bike thefts (I only know a couple of people who have gotten their bikes stolen, and they didn't have them locked... some people still don't lock up their bikes and they sit there for weeks without being stolen) Rice is a pretty safe place.

Even if you're not from a gated community, downtown isn't really good to be around after dark if you're near the freeways. We're not just being paranoid.
Other than that, I pretty much agree with what most of what thelonius said.

I had to laugh as the OP hasn't returned to this thread, I searched for other posts by her. Her son interested in Rice is in junior high - shrug - things could change a lot before he is ready for a serious college search ;)
