how's the town?

I've heard that Poughkeepie isn't too exciting. I come from an extremely small and dull town, so I'm sure that anything else would be thrilling for me, and I love Vassar right now, but I would appreciate what other people have to say about it. What is there to do on weekends? I heard lots of law/government type internships are available; is this true? What about proximity to major cities? Advice from current students or those who've visited would be fantastic.

hmm i visited over the summer so it's a little bit of a blur to me now. we only drove through what must have been the outskirts of the town. i don't think that we went near the heart of it. but from what i saw it seemed to be a little run down and nothing too special. it wasn't a full out "ghetto", no offense intended here, but it was a little sketchy maybe. I'm sure other parts of the town are nicer and still, i have heard that students are more into what is on campus anyways, and that they don't go off campus very often. i dont know if that is true. it's pretty far from nyc, i think like an hour and half or more, but i have heard that some students do take trips there. living in southern CT, i know there are some nice CT towns you can head to about an hour away. and that's about all i know.

thanks for the input. i also heard that on-campus activities are much more exciting. i guess anything would seem special to me, coming from a town pop. 1,500. i don't know if i can visit, so thanks for the info from yours.

Lemme tell ya: the town of poughkeepsie is just not that great. your town is like freakishly small, so i dunno (i'm a big city guy). I've been there for like a whole semester and yeah, boring. but like the good thing is that Vassar is a bubble so you never really need to go out that much anyways. and NYC, quite possibly one of THE largest and most exciting cities in the whole world is a two hour ($12 one way) train ride away.

archit is pretty right on.
i dont know though, i grew up here so maybe im biased but poughkeepsie isnt THAT bad. i guess its like all cities-- some good parts, some bad. even though i live right outside poughkeepsie in a suburbanesque town, mostly everything i do is in po-town. i go to concerts there, mall, movies, most restaurants, coffee shops, bookstores, etc. and the amount of nearby train stations is a plus. nyc is never too far, though always a bit expensive. but i feel like no matter where you go to college youll find things to do. im more looking forward to campus activities than exploring the city.

No seriouslii I'm from NYC Manhattan Baby all the way but I never thought that Poughkeepsie would actually take me from the city but if Vassar accepts me PO-TOWN will be this city boys new home Poughkeepsie when I went in Novemeber for my overnight stay reminded me a lot of like the Hocus Pocus(Disney MOVIe don't act like ya'll don't know) it was quaint and cozy and didn't seem so "country" or hick like I thought it would be I took the metronorth ($11) dollars up from NYC to Poughkeepsie an interesting and not so long 2 hour train ride and where I arrived Vassar College it was fun it felt like home and the dorms are let me tell you sexii they hooked up Vassar is gonna be fun so don't ya worry bout the town just worry bout ur campus you and yours and do ya'll
Peace OUt
