Hoya Basketball

Is anyone else pumped up about Hoya Basketball and do you think they have a chance to upset Pittsburgh???

I'm so pumped up!!!!!....j/k I have no clue.

I just hope they win... even though I don't really follow sports, I just like Georgetown.

oh man....so no one out there follows GTown hoops? I can't be the only one......

No, you're definitely not the only one. It's just that most of us here are, well, nerds (not in the bad sense of the term! LOL I just can see that most of us prefer academia/learning to a lot of other things). :p

im pumped about gtown! and i DO follow them a bit...tho im more of an all-around college basketball fan...march madness is comin up soon...yessss.

i dont kno a whole lot about their bball team cuz i usually follow stanford (local, i go to their games) and other high-level schools but ive seen a few headlines recently about gtown. u seem to kno quite a bit, why dont u fill us in on them lol?

If only Iverson was still around...

Sure snowfaerie I'll let you know whats going on in the world of GTown Basketball....

First of all, if you want to go to Georgetown, you have to understand that basketball is HUGE there. Back in the 80's the team was incredible. That was when Patrick Ewing was playing for them and John Thompson Jr. was the coach. Then, just recently Allen Iverson went to Gtown and the team was great again.

However, John Thompson eventually stopped coaching and the program went downhill. The past three seasons were sub-par, and the team finished about .500. This year though, Gtown hired a new coach who happens to be John Thompson's Jr's son, John Thompson III. John Thompson III is currently working with some young talent and is rebuilding the program. Freshman Jeff Green and Roy Hibbert have been contributing tremendously to the team (so any of us who go there next year can count on having a sweet team our senior year at GTown). Other top players are Brandon Bowman and Ashanti Cook.

Wednesday, Jan 5 marks the beginning of league play against Pittsburgh, who is currently ranked #17 nationally, i think. GTown is in the Big East Conference with Syracuse, UConn, Providence, Notre Dame, West Virginia, Seton Hall, Boston College, Pittsburgh, Rutgers, St. Johns, and Villanova. During the first 11 games of the season with non-conference teams, the Hoyas chalked up an 8-3 record, which is pretty good considering they lost to tough teams.

So check scores thursday to see if the Hoyas pulled off the upset against Pittsburgh and put the program back on track. And, if they dont' win, don't worry, the glory days are right around the corner.

haha thank you for the very thorough update. i feel like sacreligious (in the sense of being a big college hoops fan) for not knowing Iverson and Ewing were former Hoyas! oh well, learn something new every day I supposed, hehe

i hear sports aren't really big at gtown, can anyone confirm? (other than basketball, but i've heard that since the arena is off campus, they don't get really big crowds.)

They are gonna try to move the games to McDounough which is on campus....they are gonna add seats and make it bigger i heard. Other than that, the football games and lacrosse games get a good turn out.

oh, that makes a lot more sense

yeah, sports at gtown arent that great...no proper stadiums, and attendance is crappy. the football team is mediocre at best. soccer is decent, we reachd the semis of the big east, but lost to st.johns, who we had beaten 2 weeks ago 4-0, oh well.

Right now the Hoyas are 8-3 entering Big East play, so they have yet to truly be tested. It's a promising start, but we'll have to see how they do against teams such as Pitt or BC.

don't forget UConn and Syracuse CollegeHopeful, those are the true tests.....

Hoya Saxa! Georgetown beat Pitt by 3!

I know...it was an AWESOME game!!! I think this is the year they get back on track.
