HPME question

Hey guys. I'm applying to the HPME and Brown's PLME program, among others, and I was wondering what the focus of the HPME is.

For example, Brown's PLME program focuses on creating well-rounded individuals that enjoy not only science but also the arts and humanities.

Is the focus of the HPME similar? Or is it more pre-professional, less-artsy in focus?

Anyway, if someone has any opinions/thoughts/comments on this, I'd appreciate hearing them!

HPME is similar from what i hear.

i'd like to know the same thing.

The HPME program allows you to major in anything you want and allows students to enroll in either the Weinberg School of Arts and Sciences, the McCormick School of Engineering, or the School of Communication. At least in the case of Weinberg students, HPME students are still required to take distribution requirements which require students to take classes in a variety of areas (2 courses each in 6 areas, to be exact). Northwestern has a somewhat pre-professional slant because many of the students are there to learn the skills they need to get a good job (and NU has great job placement)...however, for HPME students, there is a lot of freedom in taking classes you want to take and in becoming well-rounded. Nobody is forcing you otherwise. For example, I'm pursuing a concentration in music studies through the School of Music while completing a major in Biology. For your undergraduate years, there really isn't a "focus" for HPME - you mainly need to fulfill requirements to graduate and you'll be on track to med school.

I really want to do an accelerated med program and major in history or something, don't really want to spend 7 years learning bio, chem and physics. Rather have some interesting courses.

Yes, definitely. You will have science crammed down your throat in med school, so everybody I've talked to in med school or beyond has told me to take as many non-science courses as I can.
