HPV(Genital Warts) Vaccine Approved. Protect yourself before you go to college.

On June 8, 2006 the FDA approved the first ever HPV Vaccine for use in the USA. HPV(Human papillomavirus) is a sexually transmitted disease that causes cervical cancer in women as well as genital warts. This new vaccine called Gardisil was developed by Merck and prevents 4 different strains of HPV. These strains combined account for 70% of cervical cancer cases and 90% of genital warts cases. The CDC has estimated that at least 50% of sexually active people catch HPV during their lifetime. Once HPV has been contracted, there is no cure, and this vaccine cannot treat the disease, it can only prevent it.

These are some news reports about Gardisil:

Cervical cancer, which is caused by HPV, kills 4,000 women every year in the US. Cervical cancer affects about 16 per 100,000 women per year and causes death in about 9 per 100,000 per year. Worldwide, cervical cancer is the second most common form of cancer in women behind breast cancer. Gardisil prevents HPV the virus that causes cervical cancer with over 90% efficacy.

Until it's sticky'ed, I'll bump this.

So this is for women only?

Just be aware, the HPV vaccine doesn't cover every strain of HPV, but it does cover the most dangerous ones (to my knowledge).

HPV can affect both men and women.

It's been linked to cervical cancer but does not definitively cause the disease. It is a risk factor like many others.

You can ask your doctor for more information.

I have a better way to prevent HPV and it will prevent all strains. DONT HAVE SEX!!

I'll bet you almost no one but you would consider that better

1 second shot or a lifetime of no sex? hmm.

Guys should get it too, when it's available. Anyone know when that might be?

yeah i plan to have sex when i grow up, perhaps even when i get married (yes shocking, no?) so this sounds like a good idea

you're out of your mind jimbob.

That shocked me.

well i was responding to klf

when do they think it will be available for men? I assume this is initially only going to be available for women.

from what i've heard, yes, only women. it's awesome that it is available though :)

HPV is the Main risk factor for cervical cancer according to the Center for Disease Control and almost all medical studies published to date. Gardisil protects against the cancer causing HPV strains #16 and #18. Those two HPV strains account for 70% of all cervical cancer cases. Gardisil also protects against HPV strains #6 and #11, which account for 90% of genital warts cases.

WHERE is it available? As far as I know, even planned parenthood doesn't have it yet. Also, my understanding is that first it will be recommended as a routine vaccination for girls and young women, to be followed by the same for boys and young men. However, once it is available at all, it should be available to boys and young men as well, and probably anyone else.

Some doctor's offices are already stocking Gardisil. Also check with any hospitals or small-practice doctors in your area. Supply is limited though, and it may not be available in your area. The reason why girls and young women came first is because Merck filed for emergency/life-threatening FDA approval, which speeds up the approval process, due to the cervical cancer issue.
