My mom recently approached me about getting Gardasil before I go off to college in the fall. I'm an 18 year old male and I wasn't even aware this was available for men--I always saw it as being targeted towards women. From my understanding, it's recommended before you become sexually active, but I am. It's also not a required vaccination by my university.

I'd like some opinions other than those on Google as to whether or not I should get this and why.

Because it protects you from HPV as much as girls. Just for the record, the medicine really hurts (yes, it’s the medicine, not the shot). I’m a girl, but even if I were a guy, I wouldn’t want to get HPV or pass it to anyone, so I’d just get the shot series started.

You should get this if you plan on having multiple partners or being with someone who isn’t a virgin. So basically, yes you should get it unless you plan on being a virgin until marriage… and you marry another virgin. There’re very few side effects and it’s worth it to protect yourself and your partner.

You should talk to your doctor first and foremost. In my case, the risks (health issues) outweighed the benefits (I am in a monogamous relationship with a clean partner so there are few benefits). Each and every case is different which is why it’s important to discuss it with your doctor.

Unless your sexual activity is confined to a mutually faithful monogamous relationship with an uninfected partner, it would be a good idea to get the vaccine.

YES. Just get it, just in case. Before you leave for college, get all the necessary shots and some rubbers.
