I was told that some schools (U of Mich) don't take uw GPAs. Papercrane, if your school only sends out weighted GPA's, do the colleges know what the unweighted grades are?

yes, they will know by looking at the transcript, which only shows unweighted grades.

bump....what if you are good freshman year, decline slightly in sophomore year, and then increase in junior year...
(at a top/very competitive HS)?

I'm in the same boat. I had a 3.5 my freshman year, but my school does not weight honors classes. (Taking all honors classes). First semester sophomore year, I had a 3.8 Weighted (only 1 ap class (only offered) but none of the honors classes were weighted). Second semester, I had better grades (As instead of A-s) but my GPA still stays the same. So, I have been increasing since 2nd semester of freshman year. Even though I only have a 3.8 (only 6 classes), is it good that my grades have been increasing even though the GPA is the same?

I'm really getting screwed. My class rank is like 20% because of PE which I got Bs in because of a surgery, and my honors classes arent weighted. What do you guys think?

It's very common for someone to struggle freshman year. Last year, as a freshman, I got around a 3.2-3.25 GPA. This year I'm getting 3.8's-3.9's. It is normal for kids to have difficulties making the transition from middle school to high school.

I have heard that princeton disregards freshman year grades. I have also attended college meetings (yale's and pton's) where this very topic was brought up. The admissions ppl responded that they do value upward trends.

I actually had a 3.9 "QPA" my freshman AND sophmore year and maxed out on my GPA junior year. I'm going to Columbia...but I did much math/sci publications/research also...

I know they value upward trends, but what if you have a slight dip in the middle in sophomore year and then go back up junior year? (slight as in about 3 points difference.... say, from a 100 to a 97)

As long as junior year goes back up and is even better (if possible, which I don't know is possible with an 100 pt. scale, I've never had one of those) it should be fine...i postulate

that's good...
